Quake Wars: Preview Thread

This morning, PC gamers woke up to learn that another of their prized exclusives is being ported to next-generation consoles. Activision and id Software have announced that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is now in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. No release date or rating was included in the announcement.

The original Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was honored as the Best Shooter of E3 2006 by GameSpot. It is being developed by Splash Damage under the supervision of id Software and is tentatively set to ship sometime during the second quarter of the year. Nerve Software, which developed the Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil expansion pack for Xbox and PC, will handle the 360 version under id's guidance. The PlayStation 3 edition is being ported by Z-Axis, which developed last year's critically drubbed X-Men: The Official Game, under similar supervision.

Though some PC devotees will undoubtedly see the console ports as heresy, Splash Damage creative director Paul "Loki" Wedgwood thinks they're a good thing. "I think given that lots of people play shooters on consoles anyway, and they're quite happy with the control schemes," he told GameSpot. "If we're able to improve that further, that's an added benefit...[because] it would just be a shame for all of those console players to not get a chance to play because they don't have a PC."

As the name implies, Quake Wars shares the setting of id's Quake series. It sees humanity locked in an interplanetary life-or-death struggle with the Strogg, a Frankenstein-ish race of zombie-like cyborgs. Its emphasis is on online multiplayer action that pits teams of players against each other in Battlefield-esque conflicts.

Bump for this one, suprised there hasn't been much interest on here for it. Comes out at the end of this month (30th).

Launch day buy for me, never played the pc version but as a huge quake III fan this will be right up my alley. Let's hope they get the port right.

Anyone else?

I wasn't that impressed with it on pc. I will wait and see reviews/perhaps play a demo if they release one before I decide on a purchase. The PC game didn't even have voice chat on release so lets hope that's not something they port over!

I don't really have much hope for the port though. The studio doing the port; Underground Development (formally Z-Axis) is being closed by Activision as soon as this game is done.

This looks awesome. I think there's a trailer on the Xbox Live Marketplace (you can probably find the same thing on Gametrailers somewhere). Reminds me of Battlefield.

Let's hope they go out with a bang then.

Strange how they've employed a studio devoid of any experience with fps games (or current-gen consoles!!!) to port it

Who's doing the 360 port and why are they different?

Nerve Software, who have only ever done ID franchise fps games are doing the 360 version. The reason for different developers is probably due to time constraints and different developers having better understanding of each consoles architecture at a guess.

Hey there, the quake wars thread (as small as it is) is here in the ps3 games section:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=478417

The game is multiplayer-focused, and i'm not sure yet if the console versions will have a singleplayer bot campaign similar to the one unreal tourney 3 includes.

No-one knows what the ps3/360 versions are like as you've said it's not out until the end of the month. Reviews of the pc version are generally favourable (84% on metacritic - http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/enemyterritoryquakewars?q=quake wars)

I read a preview on IGN Here that says that (again) the 360 version is a better version, at least graphically. Whilst there are other elements to games other than graphics, its bugging me now....

Unfortunately, if this is true, a shoddy port from the 360 I don't think can be blamed, as game is being developed by different companies for each console. I hope it was just different builds or something. I'm getting s hacked of with this. I love the PS3 exclusives but these multi platform defiances are getting annoying now. I'm upgrading my PC to play non ps3 exclusives on it!

"The PS3 game currently isn't up to par with the 360 game"

"The Xbox 360 version even includes a handy little training mission - something the PS3 game is oddly lacking."

"Our play-time was restricted to the Xbox 360 version, with the PS3 game, perhaps tellingly, only on show in another room."

Eurogamer.net said:
"The addition of a simple training mission, in which you're tutored through the basics of playing Enemy Territory-style games, is the icing on the cake. Curiously, though, it will only be in the 360 version, having been developed by Nerve exclusively for that version. No equivalent mission will make it into Underground's PS3 port - although aside from that, and an odd quirk where the 360 version allows in-mission saves in single-player, but the PS3 version doesn't, the two platform versions should be functionally identical."

From all the previews I've read it's quite worrying that noone seems to have played the ps3 version and the lack of a training mode however trivial it may be shows more effort has been put into the 360 version.

It looks as if anyone wanting this game who has a choice of platform is probably going to choose the 360, I wouldn't though as after having gotten used to the silence of the PS3 I just cant bear turning on my 360 anymore :rotfl:

QW was produced by different developers for the 360 and PS3. the devs for the 360 version thought that they'd put a tutorial in it. the devs for the ps3 version felt that it didnt need one or concentrated their focus on other aspects of the game, fine tweaking etc. it does not mean that the ps3 is "getting the crappy version"

Well it seems like we're getting a version lacking features - I could put up with a few drops in framerate like we've seen before but to not build each version identical? Seems very strange to me.

not that strange seeing as its two different developers who are not working hand in hand. what features (apart from a tutorial and in-game single player saving) is the ps3 specifically lacking?

I spent the last two nights planning and executing my new room layout (I just moved flat and a requirement of my personal AV set-up is that the 360 is hidden away in a cupboard or drawer!). It's done and now I can't hear a thing. :)
