Ok was virtually all set to get the Quads but my head was about to explode over where to put the Rotel amps as I don't really have the room :( they certainly wouldn't fit in my rack unless I bought another addon for it.

Anyway threw it at Eric and he threw these back: http://www.behringer.com/02_products/prodindex.cfm?id=B2031&lang=eng
    or: http://www.music-technology.co.uk/truth.htm

Now On paper they sound very good and Eric has listened to them and like's the sound they produce.

Biggest plus would be I wouldn't need to buy any amps which would save me over a grand and wouldn't need to upgrade my hi fi rack.

Negatives would be rip up all my speaker cable and replace with rca cable and would also have to use TRS to RCA convertors.

Also the length of rca to sides and rears would that be a problem ???

    Many thanks
    Bry

Additional negative would be if you wanted to sell them.

    Active Truths anyone ?

3 pairs for £900. What I save over the other option well if the Truths lasted 12 months I wouldn't be too concerned about S/H value there's allways someone on ebay who would take um off me hands LOL :D

I just need to be sure I'd be happy with um for 12 months though

    Hi Matt,

Thinking of all Quad 11L's as thats the only way to get the front three the same.

Other option is 21L floorstanders for front left n right as apparently blend very well with the 11L's

Although I like the look of the 22L's better.

I have a CHT 15 for bass so I'm sure I can get away with 11L's all round ??

Its just where the hell I stick the amps.

    Thanks
    Bry

Selling 2nd hand home studio equipment is easier than selling ordinary hi-fi. Market is well established and less fussy. Buyers are more concerned with the working order of the equipment rather than the original packaging etc. Depreciation is also more favourable. Selling route would be through loot.com of sospubs.co.uk . As Ian J pointed, the average hi-fi folk is too prejudicial towards non-average solutions.

Going to active speakers is the right move in any case, even in the hi-fi rack was not a problem. Most of these speakers, TRUTH included, have an XLR connector accepting balanced signal. They are much more suitable for long runs. I run cables in excess of 15m. If your pre-amp does not have balanced output you can by one of DI-boxes that would convert unbalanced to balanced signal. An 8-channel di-box costs approx £250. For the reference check BEHRINGER ULTRA-DI PRO DI4000.

Other things to consider that are good with active designs:
    • heat dissipation. If you where to extend you hi-fi rack and put one or two extra amplifiers in it, the whole space may become unpleasantly hot.
    • amplification is exactly matched to the speaker at the design stage. There are no passive solutions that would readily allow for separate dedicated amplified to each speaker driver. I consider this as an ultimate in component separation; not only that you’ll have a separate amplifier for each channel, but a separate amplifier for each driver.
    • Cabling is simplified as (un)balanced leads are tinner and cheaper. You can buy very good oxygen free 100m drum of balanced cable for £100.
    Hope this helps*.

*Like Eric, I am running an all active setup.

The Behrenger Truths are ok JSW.
I've used them before in a studio, whilst not being the heavyweights of active monitoring, i thought they gave my (attempted) mixes a good sound!...
Branxx makes a lot of sense & i would agree active speakers can present a rather good solution.

I'm sort of inbetween...using Studio monitors & studio power amps.....so, you can see, i like the 'studio' directive.

    No XLR's on the TAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......

Outrageous!!!!!......Look good on my Meridian 568.2:blush:

Other actives i've heard and like are:

    Circle HHB 5'S, Genelec 1030, Quested F11A, Mackie HR824 & Dynaudio BM6A + BM15A.
(I'm actually using passive versions of the BM15A's)

I like the notion of using studio speakers indoors....others will tell you that they prefer their 'warmer' speakers.
Suppose, i've got used to the 'studio' environment..
    Worth investigating!

    Adzman..

    JSW.

Good for you, they are well worth a go and they're not going to shatter your bank balance + you can say adios to all those 'where am i gonna put those Rotel amps' thoughts...

You should end up with some nice, clean sounding monitors.
Your TAG is certainly a classy piece of kit to connect the Behrengers to...

Let us know how you get on mate!.

    JSW,

You have made a long journey in a very short period of time from passive speakers to BEHRINGER actives and beyond.

I would agree that Mackie is a step up. I particularly like Genelecs and have high expenctations of Dynaudio. Depending on your budget, you'll be able to choose some pretty cool gear. For example single of M&K MPS-2510P (2x150W) costs around £1,400.

Another genie for you: buy them 2nd hand. These speaker are all heavy duty and last for very long time. One or two years old gear is just as new. Great value.

    JSW.

No, that's typical Turnkey!!...They must've put the tea boy in charge of their website listings, as you'll find loads of pricing errors (usually)...All the same thing..quoting prices for single units, instead of 'pairs'......

It sounds like no bugger has sorted it out yet!

BTW I do realise how important it is to listen before I buy, and Eric has suggested this to me all along.

I was supposed to go visit Eric over the last few days but unfortunately with guests being here it wasn't possible.

However I should be able to make a day available soon especially as Eric has offered not only to listen to his own batcave but to also arrange for me to spend a few hours at a dealers not far from him where I can listen to all the Monitors mentioned above :D

Only thing is who's gonna look after my wallet ;)

    Hello everyone,

You're all talking about liking the sound of monitors... but surely monitors are there to point out every little mistake? I've not quoted it but someone above wrote something about liking the sound they gave his attempted mixes (or words to the effect of). If monitors are aking poor mixes sound good, then they are not good monitors.

I own a set of Quad 11L Actives and they point out everyting! Without this characterisitic in a monitor, they're pretty pointless, right?

    Nath
