    Greetings,

I have just purchased a Pioneer VSX AX5i amp/receiver and I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I just cannot decide which standmount speakers to go for (don't want floor-standers) in the £250 to £500 range. I have £900 to spend on a front L/R pair plus a centre speaker.

I've auditioned B&W 601s3, Kef Q1 and Mission V61. I found both the 601's and the Q1s too bright - probably down to the metal dome tweeters. The Mission's were good but not quite detailed enough.

My question is this - would the Quad 12L's suit this amp? I know they'd produce their best with a stereo amp of a similar price but I want to stick with the AV amp I've bought. Haven't been able to hear these speakers with an AV amp yet. All the reviews seem to agree that the AX5i is a good stereo music performer so would the Quads sit happy with it?

    Thanks.

    Mike welcome to the forum,
Haven't heard the 12L's but their smaller brother the 11L is very good. If the 12's are anything like the 11's then they will be fantastic for you and probably withstand any future amp upgrade with ease.

Not much help I know, just my pennys worth ;)

    Regards
    John

    Thanks for your input John.
Yes the Quad 11L's are amazing little speakers for sure.
I suspect the 12's will sound very similar in the midrange/high frequencies but heavier in the bass regions thus giving an altogether more powerful wedge of sound - which is why I feel they should be OK in an AV setup.
I have just arranged an audition of the 12L's for this Friday.
I plan to take my amp into the shop to test them with.

    Regards

    Mike M

    Mike M,

Do you have a CRT TV? If so I hope you're not planning on putting the Quad's too close as only the centre is magnetically shielded.

I'm also looking to spend the same amount however am waiting to hear the new Kef Q4 (very slim 3 way floorstander) and Wharfedale Evo 10's.
