    Can some please help me.

I need some speaker cable to wire up my Denon 3805 to my Mordaunt Short Genies, and getting very confused. As a result i settled for the QED Silver Anniversary, however, i really cant afford it.

Is there any other cable i can use which is equivalent to the QED Silver Anniversary. i also need something quite thin at the same time as i have to run it under my flooring. Flat cable would be ideal.

How is the maplins cable http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=50&TabID=1&WorldID=&doy=11m11 ?

    TIA.

    Bal

have you thought about making your own? (such as twin and earth mains cable or cat5). much cheaper and as good (in the case of T+E) or better (in the case of the cat5) than the QED stuff.

fair enough. the twin and earth stuff is no more "diy" than silver anni though, you just strip the conductors like you would with "speaker" cable. it costs less than 20p/m so if you want to save cash it might be worth a look.

Qed have just released a silver version of their micro cable @ £3.49 p/m
I'd guess it is the same cable but thinner hence less strands. Not flat but definately smaller!

    Hi

Decide (if you can) on a cable, or as above post, 2nd hand QED SA or Ebay!

    Hi bbasra,

if you do a search on these forums for mains speaker cable and cat5 speaker cable you'll come up with loads. without exception (as far as I'm aware) everyone who compares mains flex to their £2-10 per metre speaker cable agrees that there is nothing to chose between them (apart from their massively different costs).

Everyone who makes the cat5 stuff finds it much better than anything they've used before. The difference with this cat5 stuff isn't subtle either, its bloody obvious.

what I would suggest is buying a couple of metres of mains flex (needs to be SOLID core twin and earth) and testing it side by side with your existing cable or some QED borrowed from a hifi shop, if you find the QED preferable in your system you've only wasted about 50p, if on the other hand you can't hear a difference then you've saved yourself a fair amount of cash. Give it a go, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

    HTH

Erm ... well QED or any other dealer bought cable in the known audiophile universe comprises [generally] of copper cored electrical conductors covered in dielectric insulation of some sort = thus we have "proper speaker cable",

T+E, CAT5, The Mains cable on your Kettle etc etc, fulfill exactly the same parameteres, as long as you use an equivalent size CSA of copper (ie diameter) as the "proper speaker cable" in most cases T+E 2mm2 does so IME, then you have "proper speaker cable" also keepign an eye on relative LRC values (Load, Resistance, Capitance), there is a very good thread on this cable forum about CAT5 cables that concerns £60 per metre QED Genesis speaker cables you should read.

When you read these threads prepared to feel rather humped by the audiophile cabling industry for what you have been charged for cables in this hobby. I personally speaking balk at anything over £1/14 per metre. (3 CAT5 cables for your info). YMMV of course. QED SA even at a bargain pirce of £5/m is a blatant rip-off IMHO of course.
