Just packing my gear for this weekend's photography experience at Howletts Wildlife Park and noticed that my q-strap neo has torn right through. Really glad I noticed this prior to using it as I was going to be using the strap with my D750 and 70-200mm f2.8. That would have been a really expensive accident

I've now got to try and find a replacement but am heading off first thing in the morning so will need to find a camera shop somewhere down there. Does anyone know of stores in Folkestone, Dover or Canterbury that stock Black Rapids? Failing that I'll have to see if I can get Amazon to deliver to the hotel.

Which BR is better, the RS-7 or the Sport, or the Sport 2.

So Amazon won't deliver to the hotel before Monday for some reason. Can get it Saturday delivered to home or work, but as soon as I select the hotel it will only deliver Monday. Same with click and collect. Just checked Jessops who stock the RS-7 but they don't have it in their Canterbury or Dover shops  Bit of a nightmare. Don't fancy carrying the D750 with 70-200mm f2.8 and 150-600mm around all day on the normal neck strap, even over my shoulder

Serves you right for trying to use a mankini as a sling strap!

I've had the RS-7 for years, never failed me. Can't comment on the Sport versions or tell you where to get one close to you, sorry.

Thanks very much, much appreciated but I have a BR sport coming to the hotel tomorrow now.

We decided to go to Port Lympne Safari Park today whilst here and managed to pick up a 'cheap' op tech one from Canterbury cameras today. Whilst very secure it's a nightmare to use, the strap gets in the way of the controls, grip and viewfinder

I do hope Howletts is better than Port Lympne when I go on Sunday, Port Lympne was very disappointing tbh :(

Howletts is great tbh, been there loads as we have season tickets. Also have season passes for Wingham Wildlife Park which if you want to get up close and personal with small animals you can't beat. They also have a great walk through ring tail lemur enclosure where they jump all over you.

I'd wait till the end of the year if you're thinking of season passes as the chimpanzees should be in by then

Tbh I thought Port Lympne was a bit run down, a few poor enclosures and there were a number of animals that looked disturbed or bored :(

Also from a photography point of view it was rubbish too, not one clear view of animals in their enclosures, Chester Zoo and Yorkshire Wildlife Park are much better for this, YWP especially. But this is secondary to the welfare of the animals and upkeep of the park, which both were slightly poor IMO in the case of PL.

Edit: I have found out that they are currently working on upgrading the park so, basing it on Howletts, I'm sure they'll do a good job.

That's really sad to read, must admit I've always struggled with the concept of zoo's ever since seeing Guy the gorilla, when I was very much younger than I am now, and just thinking how sad and bored he looked :( It does seem that the 'modern' zoo seem to do a lot for the welfare of the animals and also for the protection of the ones left in the wild but I can't help but think how much happier they would be not caged. It's a doubled edge sword really I suppose :thumbsdow

All of the animals at Wingham are rescued. The chimps that are coming in are all rescued from the labs

Yeah I would much rather the animals be in the wild too. However, seeing where these parks rescue the animals from and seeing the new lives the animals lead I will always fully support them. I don't know the history of the animals from Port Lympne to be fair, and probably the animals have a better life than they did, but it looked a far cry from other parks I've been too.

I wasn't aware that the animals are rescues, knowing that makes me feel a lot more comfortable about them now.

Quick update, the Black Rapid Sport Strap is excellent, completely different league quality wise and very comfortable.

Howletts was superb, really nice park, great enclosures and well looked after animals. Will post a full write up tomorrow, but thoroughly enjoyed it, in fact hands down one of the best experiences of my life. I have never, and probably will never get so close to wild animals like this again. At one point I was up against the mesh and the Tiger literally brushed past me. I had a lion roar in my face from literally 6" away if not closer, and I had Lemurs jumping over over me, running through my legs and trying to get in my back pack ;) Doesn't get much better than that. Oh and I had an elephant charge at me. There was a big steel fence between us to be fair but they can still stick their heads and trunks though ;)

The photographer who took us round was an absolute top bloke, really nice guy, helpful and full of good stories and experiences to share.

I can highly recommend this experience :)
