I've read on other forums where they score their subs according to the movie Pulse. Chapter 15 has some of the strongest bass of all movies to date, so I thought I would take a measurment today.

In a 5m by 4m room listening at exactly 4m from the sub where I took the measurement from using a radioshack metre.

Before she walks through the door the "pulse" was peaking at 111db but when she walks in it hovers around the 111 to 113db and peaks at 115db. cousing my wife in the kitchen to violently knock on the kitchen door to get me to turn it down:D but her knocking was no match for the "pulse"

I went in to the kitchen to see what the fuss was about, every cupboard and door was shaking, loose wall tiles were ratling on the wall while the actual wall was visibly moving, I could actually see it:eek:

In the viewing room, it sounded tight, powerfull and it was felt inside my head, a great bass experience.

So, what are your db measurments with this film?

Any chance of adding some more parameters to this?

It will all depend on how loud your system is set up for, how well calibrated your sub and system is, how much other stuff in the building is shaking audibly, acceptable distortion levels and so on. :)

Most of the shaking it seems was in the kitchen behind me, although there was a picture on the back wall to my left emiting some vibrations. I think vibrations are only going to make small insignificant additions to the sound level IMHO.

All speakers were set to 75db, whilst the sub is to 77db. I couldnt detect any audible distortion, there may well have been som but I couldnt detect it, overall sound was solid.:)

P.S. I use C weighting fast and max on a digital metre.

In the interests of longevity of member's subwoofers I strongly suggest you sneak up on your maximum levels on this film.

Back off as soon as you notice any unusual sounds (like bottoming or amp clipping).

The levels are already insane and underscored by a repetitive inaudible VLF pulse. The cones can be seen behaving very strangely on my IB without an audible cue to the massive cone excursion.

I thought you were the only one excluded from that misbehaviour of sub amp :( [barring low/mid end subs]

I was running the sub very hot. I'm not sure whether I bottomed out or ran into clipping.

none of the IB owners has reported this issue, but some are successful in hitting their spl >120db - with same EP2500 amp, hope you are following that discussion

I have just found it over on AFff. ;)

I can peg the needles on my RS meters on the 120dB range on test tones.

100dB(C) @10Hz (RS meter uncorrected) with lots of excursion to spare but not brave enough to go higher.

"Pulse" was another matter. I had it cranked above reference on MV just to hear the dialogue on L&R. The sub was running 12dB hot. The violence of the Pulse scene was insane so I quickly turned it down.

My copy had a dead dialogue/center channel so I took it back for a refund and refused a replacement. It's not a great film so I wasn't bothered at the time. Now I have to go out and buy another copy just to compete. :suicide:

    Bøøger.

I did mention Pulse a while back in a thread about the best bass bits in films to test subs with, can't remember which one, but no-one at the time seemed to listen.....;)

    It's damn scary on a KEF 209.........

I tracked down a new copy of Pulse. :smashin:

The first problem was the timing of the server room "pulse" relative to region.
The second problem is the insensitivity of the RS meters to low frequencies.
(well that's my excuse anyway) :D

First try: The RS meter registered 100dB(C) Fast at the listening position. 9ft from IB.
The Galaxy 140 registered 108dB(C) Fast (Max hold)

1 meter away from the manifold the RS meter registered about 106-7dB(C)
    The Galaxy 140 registered 118dB(C)

Inside the manifold the RS meter measured 116dB(C)
    The Galaxy 140 128dB(C)

I didn't push it any harder because the doors were rattling too much. Which the meter would probably pick up in preference to the subwoofer's output. There was masses of excursion left to try again tomorrow. (except for a very serious cone wobble at one point much later in the scene)

The ceilings, paintings and doors downstairs were rattling wildly according to my wife.

This bass competition thing is contagious, innit? :)

111dB, ttree? Me worried? Do I look worried?

Nimby - All of a sudden my PC-Ultra doing 112db on an un-corrected RS meter in my seating position 10ft away does not seem so bad :D

No wonder the Ultra started to complain

When i was playing with mine at that level the whole house was shaking like mad. Picture frames and glasses were jumping about and the front door and window frames were rattling against their stops as the air was being forced and then sucked out of the room.

My neighbour two doors down came in to see what the noise was about :suicide:

Nimby, not 111db, that was the lowest part of the "pulse" the main pulse was peaking at 115db at 14ft from the sub, I havent tried it at 1metre.

Perhaps you should be worried? I doubt it somehow:D

Yes, this bass larking around is a blast.

I'm just not brave enough to push it any harder with my present BFD setup. :suicide:

I'll try bypassing the BFD for a flatter response to see if it helps me compete with you guys. ;)

Somehow I rather doubt it.

I personally don't think it is as bad some people make out

I've watched it a few times but must admit normally with un-suspecting visitors that normally leave my living room green and exhausted from abnormal amounts of LFE that they are not used to :D

Oh yeah - Forgot about Kirsten

Due to all the feeble American copies of Asian horror films, i wasn't looking forward to it, but it's better than most of the remakes. Better than Dark Water anyway......
