Just a survey to see what the average problem rate is for the Panasonic.

Some readers may be getting scared having read the unfavourable posts regarding faults, but hopefully this will answer the question.

I'll start the ball rolling with my faulty unit:D

Mine's great but only used it for 367 hours.

Still 4,633 to my next bulb.

    Edited 22 March 2003:

It just died after 834 hours. Flickering picture, pulsing noise and flashing LEDS.

Mine's fine also...well apart from a green very faint circle that's only really noticible on very dark scenes...don't know whether it's dust or stuck pixels?? Maybe I should post on a different thread!

Anyway apart from that I've been very happy with the Panny over the last two months.

    hi Pablo,
Sounds like Dust on the panels to me. blew it out with compressed air. this was on my first one. my second AE100 is on the way back to Panasonic as I type. So in answer to this thread YES!!! i've had problems and I WANT IT BACK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Sound frustrated, you got it in one. Just got to sit back and stare at my very blank Icestorm 5 screen. I must admit to becoming a tad concerned regarding this machines reliabilty given that i have had the same problem twice, and i'm not alone eh Pinda.

    All the best........Splice.

    Look's like 1 in 4, PT-AE100 projector owners had/have problems.

Isn't technology great. It only took me 10 minutes to work that out on my new scientific calculator :D :D :D

A similar pattern seems to be emerging at AVS forums.

Some important conclusions to be drawn from this for prospective buyers.

Be very careful if purchasing from internet retailers. You stand a 1 in 4 chance of receiving a "faulty" unit, so check the policy of the retailer on faulty units, eg. dead/open pixels, colour irregularities on the panels - will they replace your AE-100?

I have 1 open blue pixel, which renders the unit useless for HC use. I'm still awaiting a reply from the retailer re a replacement unit. Will post when it's resolved.

Another question to the 8 (not including myself) unluckies:

How did/are you getting on with your suppliers? Any comments, good, bad or indifferent?

It might be interesting to know how many of the projectors with problems where the european/north american versions and how many were the japanese versions.

For what it's worth the dealer I bought it from in Northwich, Cheshire was more than happy for me to compare what machines he had in and pick the best! Although I paid slightly over the odds (£1450 but on a 12 months deferred with 10% down) the locality of the dealer - less than 10 miles away - and the service he offered was more than worth it IMHO.

Many of the machines they sell go to pubs and clubs and he said the odd pixel isn't a problem for them. He confirmed that Panasonic's UK (European??) policy is that it is acceptable to have up to 3 dead pixels (assuming not slap bang in the middle) - anything over and they will replace the unit.

absolutley no problems with my dealer in henley. When I had to get mine replaced, I was expecting them to send it off to be repaired but they just told me to keep hold of it for the time being and they'd call me when they got a replacement. A quick visit and an exchange of boxes and I was happy again.

sorry it's been so long before replying, but I haven't been checking the thread

I bought mine from the Panasonic dealer in henley (01491 579054, i think)

got mine for £1275, but that was a special offer due to panasonics deal with local companies. If you're in the area, your company may have a similar sort of deal with them.

I've looked up henley and there are around 8 of them in the country!!. Too late anyway, I got my from System Sound of Sudbury, coz they had one in. I did have to pay way, way over the odds though...:( No problems to date, and very pleased with it.) Just building a HTPC on the sly to complement it. (The Mrs must never know - I am buying it in dribs and drabs!)

I have heard good and bad things about the PA-AE100. There are a lot of people here who have had many problems with the units.

What I would like to know if even though you have had the problems do you still recomend the units?

I also cannot understand why after purchasing the projector from a shop you are having a problem with panasonic on the warranty claim. Surely your claim is with the shop you purchased the unit from (as per the sales of good act). If you choose to let the unit be sent to panasonic and not just replaced and they cannot fix the unit in a reasonable period of time you are entitled to a refund from the seller as you could claim the unit was not of suitable quality.

I have never had a problem with warranties and receiving the service I expect. I don't understand why there are so many people having difficulties. Could this be due to purchasing the items cheap from less reputable suppliers??

    Any comments would be apreciated.

I don't get why people don't go for other units it's not like the Panny is better or _that_ much cheaper considering the potential hassle, blowing after 50 or a 100 hours is just ridiculous, that would put me off Panasonic for life.
