ARGH! the fan bearings have gone in my PSU and its making a right racket! is there anything I can do or is it a new PSU for me?

If so, what do I need to look for on the new PSU?

A bit iffy I know, but will it be to risky to stop the fan for a while?

    Cheers

MIght be iffy to stop the fan completely but it is possible to swop it for a quieter version like a papst or a panaflo, just be sure to have left it unplugged at the mains fro a couple of hours before taking it apart as they hold high voltages for a while after being switched off.
