Sony made a few changes to the menu screen with the PSone IIRC. You could probably save 20% by moving the PSU offboard immediately.

    I wonder what they'll change/upgrade internally & externally?

It would be good if they got rid of that silly DVD drawer and made it a top loader.

I want to see what it looks like!

I still hate the PS2's design.

They should include a HDD and modem too! But then that wouldnt make it smaller.

Personally out of all of the current consoles I prefer the design of the Gamecube the best. It's small, a top loader, has 4 joypad ports & decent size on/off, reset & eject buttons. It also feels well made & looks pretty stylish considering it's basically just a cube. I'm no fan of the PS2 design and it feels the worst made out of the 3 consoles but the X-Box, whilst solidly built looks terrible and is far too big for my liking.

I just hope that neither Sony or M$ release another drawer loading machine again, I hate them.

I suspect top loaders could become a thing of the past given that MS and Sony are aiming for the media entertainment sector as a whole, so everything will look like a CD / DVD / AMP etc so it can all fit in with existing units.

it seems not as the new pics show the unit having a flip top lid. Personally I can see no merit of a drawer type system if nothing is going to be stacked on top of the unit. The only reason HiFi systems employ the drawer loading system is due to the fact that they are either stacked or, if in one unit, the CD player us often not the top component. My mini Sony hifi has a flip top lid though and it's great and still looks stylish.

Sony need to realise that people don't really want to stand their console on it's side and neither do they want silly flimsy dvd drawers.

    very true
but why would i want to blend it in with my hi-fi ?
i would rather show it off standing alone, at least then its more noticable
im with gthom3 on this one :p gamecube sure beats them hands down in design (and everything else)

honestly, i think the pstwo pics on the link in the above post look absolutley f***ing disgusting !
whos placing bets those thin ally things are going to break within a month ?

PSTwo has a built in ethernet port apparently. BBC Technology Site

I like drawer loading machines - it means I can put them in shelving units. I hate the fact I have to pull out my Gamecube to load in a new game, its very annoying.

lets face facts none of the three consoles are easy on the eye lol.the xbox is a beast of a thing the ps2 is just, well it looks like a small delonghi bedroom air purifier and the cube has that silly bloody handle which means you cant have it flush to anything an feels rather flimsy.i like the slim version and it will go nicely standing up at the side of my amp and xbox :smashin:

hehe, the xbox may take the weight of several small buildings, but trying to stack anything on it proves a tricky balancing act. However, it does nestle nicely in the bland ikea unit adjacent our TV.

The Game cube is just so small, shame cables have to be involved as its the only console that really gets moved about the house.

I was hoping the PSTwo would be similar to the PSOne in design so seeing the result of "Honey I shrunk the PS2" is a tad disappointing.

Personally I think that the Dreamcast and the Gamecube are the best designed consoles of the 128 bit era. My reasons -

-The flip top lids allow for quick game changing and remove the risk of mechanical failure attached to drawer loading mechanisms

-They both have 4 non easily accessable joypad ports on the front (although the X-Box also has these)

-They are both small, compact designs.

-They both have decent sized on/off, reset & open buttons making the devices more user friendly for all age groups.

I personally don't think that Sega & Nintendo's problems lie in the quality of their games hardware as they generally turn out great consoles. The Saturn wasn't perhaps up to standard technically and it was a bit too big but it wasn't that badly made. I see there problems being more on the marketing side. Generally each company appeals to kids and hardcore gamers and neither have been able to market that successfully to the mainstream markets, like Sony have. I would love to see another Sega console one day but I doubt that will ever happen now.
