Thought id start a psp thread that answers some frequent questions. Feel free to correct me or add anything to this thread.

ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENCES IN JAP AND USA SCREENS?
NO. THERE ARE NO NOTICABLE DIFFERENCES. I HAVE A JAP PSP MY BROTHER HAS A USA PSP AND THERE IS NO DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SCREENS.

    ARE GAMES REGION LOCKED?
NO. GAMES FROM ANY REGION WILL WORK ON ANY PSP.GAMES HAVE THE REGION LOGO ON THE BACK BUT ARE NOT LOCKED TO THAT REGION. IF YOU WISH TO LINK UP TO PSPS THE GAME MUST BE THE SAME REGION BUT NOT THE PSPS.(A JAP PSP CAN CONNECT TO USA PSP BUT BOTH GAMES MUST BE SAME REGION).

    ARE MOVIES REGION LOCKED?
YES. MOVIE UMD DISCS ARE REGION LOCKED. USA UMDS WILL ONLY WORK ON US PSP. JAP GAMES SHOULD WORK ON UK PSP AS THEY ARE BOTH REGION 2. REGION 1 UMDS ARE CHEAPER THAN JAP ONES. IF YOU PLAY A LOT OF MOVIES THEN YOU WILL PROBABLY BE BETTER OFF WITH A US PSP.

IS THERE A REGION FREE HACK?
NO THERE IS NOT CURRENTLY A REGION HACK FOR THE PSP.

HOW DO I PUT MOVIES ON TO MEMORY STICK?
YOU NEED TO DECRYPT THE MOVIE FIRST WITH DVD DECRYPTER THEN RUN THROUGH PSP VIDEO 9. A GUIDE CAN BE FOUND HERE http://seamonkey420.tech-recipes.com/psp/dvd_to_psp.html
YOU THEN NEED A CABLE TO DOWNLOAD FROM YOUR PC TO PSP. THESE ARE SOLD BY MOST PSP SUPPLIERS FOR APPROX £5

HOW DO I PUT MUSIC ONTO PSP?
CONNECT PSP TO PC WITH CABLE THEN DRAG MUSIC FILES TO PSP FOLDER.

WHAT MEMORY CARD DOES THE PSP USE?
THE PSP USES SONY MEMORY STICK PRO DUO MEMORY CARDS. THE ONE THAT THE VALUE PACK COMES WITH IS NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR MOVIES. I WOULD RECOMMEND AT LEAST A 512MB CARD FOR MOVIES.

    ARE DEAD PIXELS NORMAL?
A FEW DEAD PIXELS ARE CONSIDERED NORMAL. MANY DO NOT HAVE ANY. IF YOU ARE UNLUCKY AND GET DEAD PIXELS THEY MAY WELL NOT BE VERY NOTICABLE, ONLY SHOWING UP ON A DARK SCREEN.

ARE THERE ANY DIFFENCES BETWEEN JAP AND USA PSPS?
THE ONLY DIFFENCE I KNOW OF ID THE JAP ONE USES THE CIRCLE BUTON FOR YES AND THE USA ONE IS THE X FOR YES. (THE SAME AS THE UK PS2)
    THE SCREENS ARE THE SAME.

dead pixels are those with no lights (black dots) when the screen is on with lights. the ones that you see when the screen is dark are light pixels (their colors will vary such as white, green, blue, red etc.)

    Add this:

    Music
MP3 files can just be dragged in to PSP MS folders,

But Atrac 3 plus files must be transferred using Sonic Stage 3.2. However this offers same SQ for lower file size. But bungling Sony UK still haven't fixed the download link yet. You're still directed to 3.1.

3.2 offers several more bitrates. I think PSP doesn't work with 3.1, I'm not sure

    Pixels
Black pixels are dead and can't be fixed. Any other pixels are stuck and could be fixed. Google for PSP stuck pixel video fix. Remember I said could, not can.

    PSP to Internet
The PSP can access internet using its Wi-fi to access a wireless internet access point. You need a wireless router 802.11b NOT 802.11g. 'g' is newer and faster but PSP does not support it. Make sure you get a 'b' or dual

WHERES THE BEST PLACE TO IMPORT A PSP FROM?
Movietyme.com and liksang.com are always recommended. I have ordered a psp from Movietyme and had no problems. They supply the us version. Delivery is usually fast (a few days). I found e mails are replied to very fast. Also no import duty or taxes. Games are also cheap.
I have never used liksang but they have been recommended on this site a few times before. Also not sure about import duty from them.

you allways get nailed for import duty at lik-sang.they do nothing to try and lighten the load.plus what people are not saying as well if you buy one from japan etc if something is wrong you get nailed for the price of sending sending it back.you can buy them in this country now for a good price so why would you want to get them from abroad.

Psp's bought in europe will have firmware 1.52 on them with a umd to update them to 2.0!!!

If you want to have homebrew applications on your psp do not update, as there is software available to downgrade 1.52 to 1.5. But none is available to downgrade 2.0.

I have had my Japanese PSP for a while now (its upgraded to v 2) and my mate just bought a UK PSP.

We both have Tiger Woods imported from the US and they work fine in single player mode but we just cannot get them to connect in head to head mode - it just says searching for oponents and never finds any!!

Any help would be greatly apprciated.

    Thanks

Re: putting movies onto memory stick, does it matter if you'e running v2.0?
Also, can a US PSP read R2 movies off a memory stick, or a Jap PSP read R1 movies off a memory stick (ie does putting them onto the memory stick remove any region coding from the dvd)?

I'm contemplating buying a ceramic Japanese PSP and have a few R1 dvds that would be nice to watch via a memory stick on it...

They should be region free if you have put them through decrypter or similar program so no probs.

v2.0 offers the AVC codec which is far more efficient so you can have greater quality for the same size files as standard or, you can have much smaller files for the same quality as standard.
