PSN Download Of Full BD-ROM Release

Had a look on PSN Store last night as I was a bit bored and fancied a new game and tbh I was very dissappointed at the lack of download alternatives to full retail, in the shops, PS3 BD-ROM's.

Not a problem if you're after a PS One classic, PSN only game or content for PS3 Retail BD-ROM's but, as for actual alternatives to buying disc's there were 11 to download....bearing in mind there are 557 PS3 Retail Games, 11!!

Anyone else a bit dissappointed by this?

I understand that there is some re-sale value attached to having a physical disc but, sometimes you know that you are unlikely to ever resell a game due to the nature that you will never complete it a la Buzz, Trivial Pursuit etc...

Plus surely if it was discounted against the Retail version then wouldn't that make it more appealing?

Anyway I have stuck a poll on so, please vote, also this probably should be within the Network sub-section but, I thought it would get more feedback here in general news/chat.

Edit: I was going to add a poll but, you only get 2 minutes to do it!

Cheers

I think a few games would be too big to download and keep on HDD.

BD-ROM have upto 50gig, imagine trying to dowload a 50gig game on a 40 gig HDD.

Indeed but, isn't that why Sony made the HDD swappable?

Just seen a 750gb 2.5" HDD on Scan and they have a 1Tb awaitng an ETA!

And surely the future of gaming must be in downloadable format, like Steam for example - which isn't perfect but, the concept is good.

If you can download the whole 50 giger on your PS3, what is to stop someone hacking that app and piracy spawns?
This is what Sony don't want...
Will be interesting to see what they do with this uncrackable piece of machinery..

I think it has more to do with the fact downloading 50GB on a UK average broadband connection of 3Mb that's mega bit not mega byte which equals around 300-350 KBps download rate isn't going to be very helpful...

your looking at around 36 or so hours of constant downloading before it's done.. dunno about you but i wouldn't want to wait that long to be able to play a game.. it's why gaming hasn't gone fully digital downloadable yet.

Pc gaming is still in the realms of duel layered DVDs ie around 8GB, big difference waiting for 8GB than 50.

As a gamer with half an eye on value for money I try to avoid downloading games. I want an actual disc that has re-sale value as games are already expensive enough. No doubt Sony or MS whoever hate the 2nd hand market but it makes all the difference for some households. If you spend £40 on a game and finish it within a week its highly likely you can re-coup most of that cash by selling on. With a DL once its done, its done !

Very true good point..
My mate has Wipe out HD, it made his whole system fail.. shows you how a DL release of a Title can fail miserably..
If only they had gotten off their lazy asses and released it on dvd, its only 1 gig big..

I agree, I like PSN downloads that are £15 and under, as I don't feel the burn as much when I stop playing them. Wipeout HD being prime example, I bought it when first released, played for a week or so, then stopped. But I don't feel like I wasted money as it's there when I want it and it only cost £11.99.

So lets just say a very average game like [insert almost mediocre game title here] costs £29.99 from the PSN store and is the only way of playing it. Where is the money back guarantee you'd get from eBay or game trading if you hate it or play it for only a week, you're stuck with it, and you will never get that £30 back.

I do genuinely fear for the gaming market with the way it is going, it will be all about the bigger games, and there wont be as much choice, because no one will want to buy the crappy games for full price so smaller companies who make a bad game will be ruined! I'm completely against digital distribution unless the prices are at least half the rrp or lower.

Before anyone gets the urge to buy, its useful to point out that the 750GB drives at the moment are all 12.5 mm drives.

The PS3 needs the smaller 9.5mm 2.5" drives.

At the moment the largest 9.5mm drive is 500GB.

Its on its way as a Disc release IIRC.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen gaming system was a download only platform. This way they kill the 2nd hand market completely and keep the profits all for themselves. Game, Gamestation and Cex etc could be in a whole world of pain. Lets face it why would Sony or MS license any other retailer to offer DL only services.....just won't happen. Despite all this we are only talking about data so any system WILL be hacked sooner or later leading to a free for all of people downloading games off the net for use on their flashed consoles. The only true way that MS or Sony or whoever could 100% control their content would be Cloud gaming. We have 50Mb packages from ISPs now so such a system could actually work!

Bout time, this game has been out for 6 months at least, and they decided for a hardware release, nice...

Nearer to 12 months IIRC. May even pick this up again on BD if I can find it for c£15. I imagine it will be released with the add-on pack that came out a while ago - and which I held back on downloading.

Yes it would, but discounting will rarely happen just yet on DL product as it would reduce retail stores' buying in of the physical product if Sony start direct selling cut-price digital copies en-masse.

All valid and good points guys, it was one of those sat at home, all the shops are shut, why can't I DL a new retail game puzzlers.

So, in summary the infrastructure is not in place, in a widespread enough format to enable this to be a reliable/fiscally beneficial format for Sony to use.

Fair enough.
