Now announce the delivery plans, already

Speaking with joystiq just moments ago, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida just told then that the PS4 will support 4K (Ultra HD) output but only for video that was recorded in the format.

Yoshida went on to clarify that the resolution will not be an option for gaming but given the hardware specs, that was never likely.

We've long anticipated that the PS4 would be part of Sony's Ultra HD strategy and although they didn't give any clues at last nights event, choosing instead to focus on the gaming and social aspects of the new console, we were expecting exactly this kind of news from them later in the year but not necessarily today!

Now then Sony, how about some more details?

This is an advantage and will future proof for when 4k tv's are more affordable in X amount of years.

Im curious about seeing how all other 4k things are being priced how will this effect the console cost.

They never said what delivery system but seems like it'll be download, as they haven't talked about optical drives much at all. PS4 may not even play discs ! No idea yet. Thats another worry as net infrastructure and download limits/fair use policies are still a big issue here and in other countries (despite what some think)

Also interesting to see that it apparently wont 4k upscale which will Hopefully would be addressed as many would like that. If not then at least allow a clean unprocessed feed for say a receiver to upscale. But if not disc based well then this would make more sense why the feature is missing.

also no 4k game support surprised many, not immediate integration as this isnt even on PC's but maybe a mention or ambition. But I think all will be happy with proper 1080/60 with no tearing or frame dropping.

    For me the only 3 things of the conference tht were any good was;

Watchdogs ( looked very impressive and interesting idea )

The Sculpting thing ( the band was just cool, looks great fun with friends )

What Capcom is doing. If the game comes close to that vid it is a beauty.

Most disappointing was Killzone and Square Enix. Killzone looked dull and like #2 nothing made me say wow and that one was as dull as dishwater.

Square Enix It just looked so old, the video showcasing their ambition felt very rushed and lacking. It felt early PS3 and not PS4. Also their lackluster surprise big announcement of a new FF just left me going meh. Im tired of all these rushed dull FF games.

Go away for 5 years and think and make something special. Go back to the FF 7,8 years. Think about what your making.

Sadly I was forced to watch it via IGN's stream and listen to them giggle for an hour afterwards hoping for some more insight. The presentation lasted 2 hours an they giggled for an hour yet at no point mentioned ( no backwards compatibility or chances of no physical media drive ). All they were interested in was Blizzard developing for PS3"4 >.>

Will it offer 4k upscaling of any sort?
Surely it could use the processing power to upscale DVDs and bluray to 4k?

Well from what Ive been hearing on interwebs its only 4k movies.

Lack of mention, backwards disc support, blu ray mention and upscale makes me think there will be no disc drive.

Seems strange to be one of the pioneers of the format , have a console that's the biggest selling bluray player , own a load of movie studio's and then go download only.
How many people just wouldnt bother when download games are 49.99 for new release stuff and you can't swap or trade?

    Are we sure.?

Because that would indicate disc based 4k content being an option. With so much emphasis on streaming and dowloads and lack of discussion on blu ray/ disc formats or even seeing a machine.

Then its a fair conclusion. To me it shows Sony had lots of buzz at the reveal but didnt have as much substance as it should. Cant remember wen we last had a launch event without actually seeing the product.

Well according to IGN article Sony still see disc as the primary delivery system for media and major game releases and expect the trend to continue for about next 5 years.

Thats not what they are saying.

They just arent promoting it. They never promoted it for the last console, its just a function. They havent even really promoted 4k for this console only a brief part of the presentation saying will play 4k but only photo and video.

Theyre future proofing but it wasnt a key point of the presentation and think they spent about 1-2 mins at most on this.

You dont like 3D but please dont say how people dont want it. You have your opinion but you dont represent me so please dont say that.

3D can be great when used right.

You have confused yourself. The PS4 has a Blu-ray disc drive. What it does not support is PS3 game discs. PS3 game backwards compatibility will come via the cloud. It most definitely supports PS4 games and Blu-ray films on disc.

    Im not confused,

I know it doesnt support ps3 discs. There was so little mention of disc use it was a reasonable idea it might be stream only. I wasnt the only one to think so hence the reassurance given in the interview.

Thanks for that wonderful piece of advice. However I prefer not to rely solely on or soft through tens of rumour threads.

Also it wasn't an assumption, it was a rational thought that it may not. An assumption would of been me saying it wouldn't have an optical drive.
