With PS4, gamers just hit the power button again and are promptly back playing the game at the exact point where they left off.

    Sold!!!

I'm a bit underwhelmed TBH. If rather pay £500 for an uber-console than £300 for an incremental upgrade.

Will probably still get one, but the door seems open for MS to win me over.

    Want.

Don't care (too much) what it looks like, everything they said indicates a step in the right direction.

The fact all these developers were excited about developing for it, compared to the PS3 where they all said "erm, it's a bit complicated getting cell to work" is something to be positive about.

I'm sure xbox will be of similar power/capabilities but the playstation exclusives are what will ensure I get the PS4.

In fairness they ain't going to put developers on stage who would say something bad about it.

But yeah been hearing in rumours from devs saying it was much better so fingers crossed.

If the rumours are true, and last night has shown them to be very reliable so far, then the MS console will have almost identical specs.

8Gb of GDDR5 RAM though. I read that developers can do a lot of nice tricks with memory and that much fast memory could make a difference between PS4 and XBox later in their life cycle.

    Incremental upgrade? Are you serious?

    16 X RAM of PS3
    7 X GPU power of PS3

    Incremental?

And you're waiting for MS to win you over? As current rumours stand next Xbox has 8GB of DDR3 (3 x slower than the GDDR5 in PS4) and GPU rated at 1.4 TFLOPS.

If the xbox has the rumoured 8gb DDR3 ram, with 3gb reservered for OS then the PS4 should have the upper hand in this department.

    It's rumoured to have DDR3, not GDDR3.

Posted this in the other thread but it's probably as relevant here:

For those looking for a quick summary:

    - released holidays 2013
    - accessible through any mobile device (you'll be able to download games, watch friends play)
    - can share your game with friends (they can watch you play, they can remotely take control, you can upload videos)
    - log in with your facebook account so you'll be using your real name
    - key games are Killzone, New Infamous, Driveclub (those are the likely launch ones), with Watchdogs, FF and a new Bungie offering to follow
    - new camera (looks like Kinect) to follow the controller
    - controller has better rumble, a light bar and better triggers
    - blu ray drive
    - instant start from last point (when started from stand by it'll pick up in gamer from where you left off, no boot up or disc loading)
    - you can play games whilst they are still downloading from the store

That's the bits I can remember so far, so may not be complete.

Sorry but I'm just not wowed after all the hype.

I'm more interested in seeing actual games at E3.

It's a complete overhaul of the console - bears zero resemblance to the PS3 except for HDMI, USB, BD and the fact it runs on electricity!

The XBox is going to be nearly identical, that's why this generation is going to be extremely intersting as all 3 lead platforms (PS/Xbox/PC) all run similar architecture - less time developers have to spend porting, re-coding, working with completely different tools and optimizing = more time to create amazing assets and physics and gameplay...

It's a step up for sure but not the huge step people were expecting.

Hard to judge visuals on a bunch of CGI videos and then those that were meant to be in game footage were ran on PCs and not dev kits so we have no idea if things were given a little boost to build hype.

That said Killzone looked decent, textures werent great but that could be the stream.

We have no idea what res or frame rate they were running at.

All in all it was a bit of a nothing event.

Rumours is the important word here. And anyway, when playing the actual games, will there be a massive difference? I very much doubt it so all this 1.4 TFLOPS v 0.5 TFLOPS (or whatever it will be) is pretty meaningless to me.

PS4's will be quality. New Xboxes will be quality. Get whichever you want. If new Xbox has SkyGo (very likely) and PS4 still doesn't have it then that is already a plus for me over a bit of a superior speed machine as none of them will exactly be slow and struggle now will they?

Agree. I think the spec is a little lower that expecting as well. If this and the new xbox 360 are similar I don't think I will buy at launch. £4-500 will get me alot of gpu power for my PC

The spec certianly shows games will no doubt be approacing pc levels ish so if that's the case then should be all good.
Wont be getting one at launch tho be waiting out any teething issues and hold off for GT6 and stay PC.

But they have hinted at streaming PS3 games so in a way backwards compatible.

If it's not available from the off I have no problem keeping my PS3s connected for a little bit as I'm presuming PS4 game releases might be a bit thin on the ground to start with.

This is the problem, people are looking at the next-gen consoles with PC-tinted glasses on, which is frankly a bit stupid imo. Of course any mid-high end PC is going to be visually superior - in most cases you're paying over £300 solely for a GPU!

Consoles are built for a generation, not to be high-end and then need upgrading in a year to play the latest games. Developers get a lot of time to work with the same hardware and maximise its potential. They are not forced into developing games for 100's of potential configurations. Games on the current consoles are still improving visually - can't comment on latest PS3 games, but Halo 4 on the Xbox 360 is visually very impressive considering it's running on 7 year old kit.

Games on the PS4 will be a step up visually from the PS3 and will only improve over time. Not to mention that consoles are now more than just a gaming machine (whether this is what you want is up for debate however). The features we were briefly shown last night on the PS4 look/sound fantastic and again are things that will only improve throughout the PS4 life-cycle.

I didn't watch it last night, but in all honesty I wasn't that bothered. I'll wait till there is more to see before I take a real interest. Catching up this morning a bit tho, I am feeling underwhelmed and struggling to see why those who are excited, have got so excited? Is it just because it has been that long since the last new console? Fair enough I guess, but pre-ordering one at this point before MS have even revealed theirs, surely that is madness? As others have mentioned, I think the door is wide open for MS to trump that in their reveal.

Yep, I was quite impressed too - love some of the new features and some cracking new games to look forward to already.

Spec-wise, for a console, I think it's really quite good, especially the 8GB of DDR5.

It's definitely a Day 1 purchase for me as I'll keep my PS3 but would love to move onto the PS4 especially if games are going to be 1080p and consistent 30fps+
Though I actually use my PS3 more for streaming video and music than playing games but that's by the by :D

Oh, and one worrying report is that Europe might not get it this Holiday which would mean the usual March release next year :(

Think PS3 is aimed mainly at gaming and Xbox will side more towards the multimedia side of things! Im sticking with Sony. Bring it on!
