Does anyone remember the first preliminary pictures of the PS2? It looked like the Dreamcasts poor cousin with an angled LCD display on the front. :yuck:

That PS3 render looks too big for a living room console, dare I say it, even chunkier than the xbox!

Do you think it will have to be that size to incorporate blu-ray?

    my god that is ugly!

sony tend to make cool looking things and that sure aint cool, it could be a ps3 dev kit though. if anyone has seen the xbox dev kit it looked nothing likje the final released xbox but did the same thing, we could have the same thing here?

Actually UMD support would be ideal for Sony since they plan to release movies as well as games on it.
Remember that the PS3 needs to be backwards compatible with the PS2. Since the PSP is basically a PS2 it would make sense!
Still on this mock up its too pronounced. It will hopefully have a wee slot for UMDs somewhere though!

Memory sticks may well replace the current memory cards they use. Since they are smaller in size and larger in capacity that would make sense too. I also expect to see Blu Ray support. Still if they need the PS3 to be backwards compatible then a current PS2 memory card slot will also be necesary.

As for design, anything they do will be a VAST improvement on the PS2 design.
I mean cmon, I put off buying that door wedge as long as i could!

lol that is definately a mock up :D :rotfl:

I can't really see the point of having UMD on the PS3. It's a mobile format and PSP games & movies would lack the resolution for the big screen IMO. I would see it being far more realistic to have the PSP connect to the PS3 in the same way that the GBA connected to GC. When you have a large scale media such as Blu Ray, HD DVD or even just DVD then I can't see the point in UMD.

Who ever did the mock up has got the scale all wrong as well - there's no way the PS3 will be over twice the height and about 50% wider than an X-Box lol :D :rotfl:

Blu-ray is a high capacity digital media that is read via a blue laser. The discs can store upto 50gb of data (Dual Layer) and they are capable of storing Hi Def video and playing it at 40 Mbit per sec.

For more info view here .

The PS3 is rumoured to be having a Blu Ray player built in but this is just a rumour at the moment as far as I know.

I'm pretty sure Sony announced that it would definitely have Blu Ray playback.
They also said that they would make 2 models. A cheaper game only machine without blu ray and a deluxe model with blu ray.
Still not sure if this is fact or fiction, but im sure that the blu ray thing is real.

I dont think that having 2 models is a good idea since most folk would just go for the cheaper one making the blu ray compatibility pointless.

They need to do the same thing they did with the PS2. Have the player in from the beginning in order to help boost sales of Blu Ray. It is Sony's format after all. All they can do is benefit!

IMO the blu-ray will be a flop. People who can afford to have HDTV won't want a crappy cheap player like the PS3 is inevitable to me, as the PS2 is a crappy dvd player.

The masses won't have HDTV for about a decade, it is a bit premature from a film pov. But from a games pov it will be good to have all that storage, but then why would sony champion the format for film?

It is good that MS and Sony have shown this commitment to hi-def gaming, but it won't really be utilised by the majority of people.

That looks like a very badly designed set of traffic lights with a twist :)

Where are the controler ports ??

You mean sony want us to buy batterys as well??

And risk the controler going flat on us so we cant pause at that vital moment? (which could have a safty feature so it automatically pauses it just before the battery dies)

What if on a multiplayer games they conflicted with eachother?? (player 1, 2 etc....)

Questions, always so many questions

Like Logitechs latest wireless mice, you should be able to recharg it. So no need to buy batteries.
Finish playing, just set it down on its "Docking Station" (patent pending :rotfl: )

Ive actually seen a controller like that. Cant remember who made it, could have been Nyko? (the guys who made that air flow pad)

It would also make 4P games a lot easyer if we could all use wireless controllers. Sony are always getting flak for selling 4P ports sepparately!

I guess that would be a good idea, a 'docking station' :rotfl:

As long as the wireless dont bare off to the left or right or make you character spin round. Ive had that problem playing FPS games on My PC with cordless controler and keyboard and mouse :(

    maybe it would be like having the gba and the tv connecter(play it on the bigger screen) but it would have no wires, just take the game out of the psp and put it in the ps3.(no cords!?) but that wouldnt be something smart that sony would do would it? {...just a thought...:confused:}

Bl**dy hell that's good quality. 40Mbit/sec is like at least 10x the DVD quality isn't it? I really can't imagine how it could look better on a 14" TV because for me DVD quality already looks as perfect as it gets. You'd probably only see a major difference on big screens, wouldn't you.

And as for 40Mbit/sec, is that Video only? I mean, if you wanted to play movies, you would have to leave space for audio, wouldn't you. If that's the case the data rate for video would go down to something like 30-35Mbit/sec. Whatever that's still A LOT.
