PS3 worth it when you have 360?

I'm thinking about getting a PS3, although I have a 360 and I'm very happy with it. The main reason(s) why I would get the PS3 is because I never had a PS2 so I missed quite a few good games and also to have a high-def player in the house (nice on my 100" projector).

I know I can get the HD-DVD for the 360 for quite a bargain, but then I cannot play those older games either (most of them, I know about the PS2 chip missing in eu).

    What's your take on this?

Well you can get one for under £400 if you shop around, its well worth it at that price simply for the Blu ray player, as a games machine its no great shakes compared to the 360 imo but there will be much better titles out within 12 months and the price wont drop between now and then really.

    Hell No

If you have a powerful PC you can use PS2 emulator but really if you want to play PS2 games just go buy a pre owned PS2 they don't really cost much and no mod chip needed to play backups you can get swipe cards for like £20.

If you want to play PS2 software then my first thought would be to buy a PS2 rather than a PS3 as the PS3 is a bit mixed in its support, at least check out the BC compatability list for any games you are thinking of buying. New support seems to be being added as the latest update on the PS3 to 1.70 has added game support (although oddly seems to have removed some as well).

Perhaps the PS3 might be a better purchase for you with the PS2 software in mind because other than as a blu ray player the PS3 really is not a whole lot else as yet. There is some good software available (Motorstorm, GT-HD, Flow, TekkenHD) but nothing as yet to really give you much long term appeal. I personally would not recommend buying one just now but instead would wait for Christmas time where the selection would be better, I really am regretting the rash impulse purchase of one and the frustration is just growing as time is passing. With having the other consoles I have only actually turned the PS3 on twice now in the last three weeks (once to check the free Casino Royale worked and once to update the XMB to 1.70 (and download new movie/game trailers)). Motorstorm may be a more impressive launch title than say PGR3 was but it soon boils down to a limited racing game of few vehicles and tracks while PGR3 was much wider scoped. If you enjoy FPS's then there may also be some hope with RFoM, I don't and so I haven't *shrug*

Personally I am regretting buying one and will be looking to it being September (assuming the games get released as scheduled[/optimist]) before there is even one other software title I am interested in.

I would advise getting the PS2 now if you want to play those games and start building the catalogue up a bit, then come Christmas time or after 'upgrade' to the PS3 so you have both existing software to play and any new PS3 titles of interest. Having and liking the 360 really does take a hell of a lot of wind out of the sails on jumping on the PS3 boat *sigh*

That is obviously about the games console side so you should really look to how important having HD video is for you at this time, if very important (which would not seem to be the case with not having the HD-DVD add-on) then the PS3 ownership definately has a silver lining but that is about it.

Kahled, thx for the elaborate reply. I'm still in the middle. I would love to have it, being a gamer, but then again there are SO many good titles out there for the 360 (and most PS3 titles are available on 360 too), so it's a bit of a dilemma.

On the other hand, there are (and will be) some exclusives that I'd like to play, and i would definitely love to have one in the house for party games like buzz (wife likes that).

The browser seems a fun addition too, although I think its use would be rather limited on a 43" Pioneer plasma, due to a 1024x768 resolution. On the other hand again, I have a pretty decent home theatre setup (Optoma 720p themescene, 100" screen etc) which just begs for HD content (which is very sparse for the time being, let alone expensive)

For the party games like Buzz I believe (someone correct me if wrong please) you would still need a PS2 since it is geared aroud a custom controller which is not supported on the PS3, same with Guitar Hero. Third parties have released a USB controller conversion unit but not heardof much success with that (check out the PS3 forum for Guitar Hero posts).

I know what you mean about the software though on the 360 and that is where most of my frustration comes from, if you were one of those that only ever bought Sony consoles (because you know everything else just has to be inferior *lol*) then it would not be anywhere near as limited as it is.

The browser is okay but a bit quirky, definately advised to go with a Linux install and put Firefox on instead. Wireless/bluetooth keyboard will be needed as well then.

Seems you are swaying quite a bit towards the PS3 so just want to pass on one more bit of advice... go somewhere and try out that damn controller first. If you find the 360 controller very comfortable then the PS3 one may come as a bit of a shock. I have (had) to limit playing to stretches of not much more than an hour because the hand pain in the left hand became too bad, the 'triggers' are badly placed and sloped as to make it most uncomfortable to use. That kind of makes the PS3 worse for me as it even removes the buying a multi-format game on that console to even out the collections a bit, really hope the 3rd party companies bring out a better controller design for comfort... the dual shock was good because games seldom relied on the shoulder buttons for little more than the odd tap but as main use for a trigger they are not very well placed. I actually refer to the gaming position on the six-axis as the Vulcan death grip *rotf*

Anyway, if you do go for it I really hope you enjoy it more than I have/did. Check out the Little Big Planet movie and that certainly mght make you a little more interested. Might be worth asking the same question in the PS3 forum as well for some balance as there are definately some 360 owners who also have the PS3 that have far more rosey opinions on it than me ;)

If all you want to do with a PS3 is play PS2 games then just buy a PS2, it's pretty cheap these days and will support all the custom PS2 game peripherals that just don't work with the PS3. Although the level of backwards compatibility of the Ps3 with regards to PS2 games is better than a lot of people feared it would be, it's still not great, so that would be another reason to get the PS2.

On the other hand, if you want a PS3 for more than PS2 BC then I'd say it's worth getting even if you have a 360. I have a 360, PS3 and Wii and would not get rid of any of them. Most games released on the 360 and PS3 appear to be better on the 360, and although that's primarily because they've been ported from that platform it still makes the 360 game the better choice. There is enough good software available on each platform for my needs.

I haven't used the web browser on the PS3 as I use my PC for that.

I find the PS3 pad pretty comfortable, it's definitely different and a lot lighter than the 360 one but I haven't been unfortunate to suffer in the way Kahled does, I do agree that the triggers on the 360 pad are better placed than those on Sony's sixaxis.

Surely this is a question that only you can answer ?

Imho, no its not worth it as £400 for a gaming machine is ridiculous.I know it has blu-ray built in but i dont buy dvd's so this would be a feature that would be useless to me.This is where the 360 scores for me - the hd-dvd drive is optional.

It all boils down to how much money you are prepared to pay just for exclusive games and blu-ray movies.

Had a PS3, sold it after 3 weeks. Must admit though, if I had a 100" screen I would have kept it for the BD playback which is excellent.Build quality is excellent, although the controller is the weak link.Too light and too small. On the games front, AT THIS MOMENT , there is no comparison IMO .360 wins, and it was for that reason that I decided to sell ,along with the online implenatation. If you have any desire to go online , you would be disappointed with the PS3 setup if you have used and enjoyed LIVE .

    In a word, yes.

However ask yourself why you want it. If you want a PS2, well buy a PS2. It makes no sense to get a PS3 in that situatoion and the PS2 is still teh best console out there as a whole package so that makes sense. The PS3 is a brilliant piece of kit and is up there alongside the 360 in terms of a stand alone console but the games are going to be a year behind in terms of numbers. Think, can I get a PS2 now and still get a PS3 in 6 months/a years time without making it financially silly. If so, do that.

And this isn't the right place to ask for fs.

Just get a PS2 if you want to play PS2 games. Alot of the games you will want to play are unsupported also I heard that PS2 games actually look worse on the PS3. I dunno if they fixed that though.

There is honestly not much point in having 2 HD consoles that pretty much do the same high graphiced thing. Thats why there is a war aganist PS3 and 360. Not many people are willing to buy two expensive consoles that do the same thing.

i have always loved my xbox360 ive had it since lunch and have a fair few games , but over the last few weeks ive slowly been staying off the 360 and on my PS3, and do have really high hopes for it.

but in your situation i would hold out for the price to come down if you only want to play some ps2 games on it. And most of the games that are out for the ps3 look better on the 360 (so far). but that is due to the way they are being ported to the ps3.

No one is shouting buy a PS3 here, maybe the PS3 forums would be more +ve. Seems pretty unbiased opinion though, has to be said.

I'd just add "Party games" sounds like Wii territory to me.

And HD content - well, yes, it's good - I have a HD PJ too. I find HD content in things like LOST more impressive though, and that's either from SkYHD (or *cough* the internet and thus watched via a PC).

HD movies do look good, but for reasons I've explained in this thread it's not always as impressive as you'd hoped.

Sure HD video is an improvement, sure some scenes look jaw dropping, but really (don't tell anyone) you're not going to faint when you see it.

But you seem to have all the toys, just buy the missus a pair of Jimmy Choos and you'll be able to get all the consoles without her noticing

I have had an XBox 360 Premier since last April (Now a year old and still going...kiss of death!!!) and when I hooked it up to my new plasma and saw the HD content , online community , awesome graphics etc , there was an incredible WOW OMG factor.

I also have a PS3 , bought a few days after release and unfortuneately I think it is suffering from a kind of ' seen it all before' syndrome.

Yes the PS3 is a nice console don't get me wrong , yes the PS3 looks good both aesthetically and visually but there is no WOW with it..its all been done before!

If you are a must have gadget lover then yes go for it , there are some good games not to mention the Blueray but if you are thinking ' must have due to the amazement of seeing one for real' then I would wait.

The XBox 360 is not only holding its own next to the PS3 , IMO It is still the must have of the two!

I'll be buying a PS3 later this year when I head over to the States but it's only for BD playback I doubt very much that I'll be using it for games other than the odd US PS2 adventure that never saw release over here.

Everything I did want for the PS3...Virtua Fighter 5, Assasins Creed, Devil May Cry 4 have all been announced as coming to the 360 so there is no need & there's even rumours that Tekken 6 & Metal Gear Solid may even make the transition over to the 360 so tbh as a games machine the PS3 fall's woefully below expectations for me.

I will own one it's just i'm in no rush & it certainly wont be replacing my 360 as my console of gaming choice...or my Modded Saturn & JAP PS2 for that matter.

I'm in quite a unique position. I've played and loved my 360 for the past 12 months. I also have a PS3, but the difference is my good lady wife won it in a competition, hence I have no buying decision to justify.

I can safely say, having played all the 360 has to offer, and having played (and purchased) RFoM and Motorstorm on the PS3, that if faced with a buying decision when already owning a 360, I would not purchase a PS3 at this point. RoFM is nothing to write home about, and although the graphics on Motorstorm beat most 360 games, the online is crap. No-one talks, and loads of people glitch. I love Live! on the 360, because it is so central to the console. On the PS3 online is very much bolt-on, and suffers as a result.

I have no doubt some killer PS3 games will emerge over the coming months, so my opinion might change.

I have both consoles ...the last two weeks or so I've been playing PS3 only but that has been MLB 2K7 ( cant play on PAL 360 ) and PES6 ( completley different to the 360 version ) since the update last week.

It all boils down to the games you want to play ... for me when I first bought it I started to regret it but now I have these two + motorstorm which is enough for me until C&C and Forza come out on the 360 ...

I agree with everyone else though the online mode whils't it works its not a patch on live ..but hopefully that will change with a few updates and home when its released

I have a 360 and then bought a PS3 and don't regret it at all.

Using the PS3 video converter I can now watch HD media downloaded off the net on my TV, motorstorm is amazing, GT HD is great, I got casino royale for free and most importantly, it doesn't sound like I have a jumbo jet beneath my TV!

When I bought it I could see all of the dual format games being bought on the 360, I can honestly say I will probably get them on the PS3 not purely down to the background noise factor, same can be said for dual HD-DVD and Blu-Ray releases. If the specs are the same, I'll get the Blu-Ray.

You must have been playing it hardcore to get that gamer score!

ANYWAY, if you only want to play PS2 games, get a PS2, they are only about 50 quid, and who knows by the time you get round to getting a PS3, they may have come down a few quid, or at least the launch title games will have!

And think of the brownie points you will get!
