It appears Sony still can't see a future in online gaming, as they have decided not to provide a unified online gaming service. Linky

So looks like the 360 is going to be the online gamer's choice for next-gen then...

That is the worst shot of it. It looks better than the 360 from other angles, imo.

I think the game has moved on. People expect a cohesive online environment. Sony not providing a xblive-a-like would seriously damage their sales I think.

I think this is more hype, they are beavering like mad trying to create their own online experience (I hope).

a few comments id like to point out
    not confirmed yet
    not to doom and gloom

admittedly id prefer the whole experience to be fluid like XBL on the 360 but i will settle for at least some sort of online experience. again this isnt confirmed at all. im not having the console will retail at £500 who ever mentioned it, that would be something silly

oh and it looks much nice than the xbox 360 but its under the hood what counts.....mmmmm cell processor :D

wow... PS2 forum.... dont come in here very often........ oh look a 93' Nova ....with cheap alloys................ and Burberry seat covers..........:D

joking aside - i'm a really begining to think that Sony really are losing it. first a 500 price tag, then that mad controller, now no online enviroment.

Admittedly the cell processor looks mint but is it enough to save the PS3 and Sony?

I really don't believe this will be true. Imean they are fitting the PS3 with every spec known to man and not having a unified online service would be suicide imo, especially when everyone (including Sony) are taking about the upcoming networked generation... :suicide:

PS3 will rock, on a excellent note for the ps3 has anyone seen the videos yet.
The ps3 can handle 120frames per second. When i read what the xbox360 could handle i thought it was a missprint so i checked on loads of sites but they all say the box can only do 30fps, so maybe it can keep up with each frame being the same quality wise as the ps3 but cant output many of these nice frames, aww what a shame.

What a load of speculative rubbish.

Until Sony officially release information you can take anything else with a pinch of salt.

Doesn't this story stem from a early quote from Sony where they were considering a non-unified online service - ala PS2, but have since gone to say that they will have a 'xbox live like' service? I though this story was months old and therefore out of date. I suppose we'll have to wait for the official word...

As for the looks, I doubt any view of the consoles back-side would be flattering. Still with, 2 HDMI ports, 3 ethernet ports, 1 Optical output, 2 USB ports, 1 standard TV output & the obligatory power input it seems quite tidy.

is the ps3 gonna have all these stupid extras like the 360, for instance being able to view digital camera pics on it and connect an ipod?

I don't know TBH. I love the idea of being able to hook up my ipod shuffle though, better than having to rip loads of cds to the xbox and not having a clue which track was which! :(

Exactly I can see me having the old PSP connected to the 360 quite a bit, streaming music. Anyway i'm sure someone posted this elsewhere but for Sony not to bother including a dedicated online service is shocking IMO. Anyway to be honest this machine is the furthest thing from my mind with the 360 launch pending. Don't get me wrong i'll be excited come the PS3 launch but surely all real gamers (PS Fanboys being the obvious exception) are 100% focused on the 360 at the moment.

I play most of my online games through my PC, its head and shoulders above anything else when it comes to online play.

A unified online world isnt required.

If the devs dont get their online sections of games done properly then people wont play them, simple as that.

At its simplest, the ps3 will automatically open a port on your router using upnp and connect up to whatever gaming server the developer has assigned to it. Wheres the need for a unified online portal?

    That made me laugh!

    Hows this for a quote?

    - Geoff Heath, NCSoft (Korean online gaming giant).

    lol!

Spot the person who hasn't really played X-Box live (although i'm sure he will claim that he has ;) ).

I've been a big PC gamer for many years and played pretty much all of the top online PC games over the last 5-10 years. Some games do the online side well, others badly but the unified (1 identity covering every game you play) method of X-Box live stands head and shoulders above every other online service going.

some one dont like the xbox me thinks.

ive been a pc gamer online for a few years, played xbox live for the past 12 months and dabbled in PS2's none uniform service. they all should bow down to the holy grail of the xbox live service and it wasnt even that amazing on xbox 1 console, thats how bad the online service is on the others. i remember when BF2 came out on pc that was the worst interface in the history it wasnt even funny. the new 360 service looks just amazing at this moment in time, makes everything structured and easy to get a game no matter what you are doing or playing

upnp will only be allowed pez if the router supports it so really its not that simple as older routers do not all support this

PS3 will be online. It just wont have a Xbox Live type service. Thats all. Not really different from what the PS2 online service is at the moment..

Thats not to say they cant or wont create an Xbox Live type service in the future. It just wont be around when the console is launched.

as i said, at its simplest thats how youd connect up.

Surely thats how itll be on my 360 too?

I own an xbox, a ps2, and a pc, and play them all. I see constant sony bashing and ms lovin (which is strange for me, coming from a pc background i usually see the opposite!), so just want to point out that unified online gaming isnt required for a great online game.
