Digital Theater Systems, better known as DTS, was selected as the mandatory audio format for all Blu-Ray devices, including the PS3.

DTS Coherent Acoustic coding system was officially selected as the audio decoder for every Blu-Ray device. It was not only chosen because of its superior quality, but also for its backwards capability with previous DTS audio decoders, a great match with the backwards capability of the PS3 with DTS games from the PS2.

While Coherent Acoustic was made the standard, we hope that it is only the beginning. Blu-Ray Group also approved the DTS++ decoder which is the only lossless audio decoder available.

Most people are familiar with Dolby Digital 5.1 or the like. DTS is a similar format, except the audio has less compression. This results in a larger amount of data needed for audio tracks, but also provides a closer sound to the pre-compressed audio tracks. Both formats are used extensively in the movie business, and have both made their way onto videogames. One would assume that both will be on the PS3, but know that DTS will be on there for sure.
