    Hi chaps

Any ideas on forthcoming plans for PS3 hardware ?

I fancy one of these but I liked the idea of backward compatibility - and although the images would not be as good (I accept that), the gameplay of some of my favourite games is still there (GTA / Buzz / Grand Turismo etc).

I know I can keep my PS2 for these, but part of the deal is to reduce the amount of 'clutter' from under the TV - and this would help swing it.

So, any rumours of this functionlity coming back - or is this now out of the picture ?

    Cheers

maybe only in software not by hardware as that is expensive and on the downside of having the software is that even less B/C is available although someone could correct me on this point.

Yep only by software but the UK 60Gb only ever did it by software. It was the early US 60Gb which had the emotion engine hardware installed.

The PS3 with 80Gb also had it in the US via software.

I don't see the backward compatibility coming back, they said they wouldn't spend time on it anymore. Sony would have to develop a software only emulator as the UK 60G had PS2 hardware in the graphics chip.

The US 60G had the PS2 processor and graphics chip, the UK model only had the the graphics chip and the 40G has neither. It was never really full software emulation it did rely on hardware as well.

The market for backwards compatibility is probably very small, (ex PS2 owners who are upgrading) most of whom would probably upgrade anyway and just grumble about having to buy all new PS3 games.
For new customers, there isn't an issue now as there is a reasonable supply of new games, unlike when the PS3 was launched. So why should Sony waste any more resources on a very small target customer base most of whom are already committed PS3 fans anyway?

you have a very positive outlook on things but the fact is that the PS2 is still outselling the PS3 in all departments. Sony simply want you to stop buying PS2 stuff and buy more PS3 stuff as it is quite embarrasing that your previous generation hardware continues to be more popular than your latest  i love my ps3 but you seem to downplay the success of the PS2

    It could be any time.

The key to any of these questions lie with Sony in Europe. Note that all territories with the exception of the US only has one current model for sale in their area. I can't see that changing IMO. I predict any future model will have no more functionality than the present 40gig model, and changes will be purely HDD size and cosmetics/styling with some price incentives to sweeten the pill. Feel free to dig this post up and gloat if I am wrong!

It probably will never be released outside of Japan, if the previous generation is anything like this one.

There are two separate markets here:

    1) the PS2 market which comprises those who can't (won't) pay the £200 & upwards for the current generation of consoles. Many of these probably don't have HD TV's as well.

    2) the PS3 market where purchasers are prepared to spend a lot more money for a high performance console that does more than play games.

Sony want both, but know that the PS2 market will dwindle at the same time as profitability grows on the PS3 (and its competitors the wounded X-Box 360 and the Wii). With the rapid decline of HD-DVD, the PS3's Blu-Ray potential will probably rise untilthe price of players falls to around £150.

Don't forget, Sony are only interested in profit, not numbers of units.

    Just an opinion.

The PS2 is still great for young kids and my two each have one hooked up to there portable TV'S.

A PS3 really needs a big HDTV in my view to appreciate the improvement which is where your also likely to have your surround sound system.

Rejoining the PS3 arena tomorrow with the 40GB promotion that starts. Looking foward to play Drakes game.

I think that the 80gb PS3 will play PS2 games, and don't see a problem with it being software driven.

BC isnt done in software only on any of the ps3s:nono:

the 60gb still had the ps3's gpu (the Graphics Synthesizer, aka GS chip) , even if it didnt have the emotion engine. otherwise, would would be stopping them from including full software emulation on all of the ps3s? simple - they cant do it in software only. not right now at the very least

Numbers of units = profit as Sony make their money from licensing payments from software sold so the more units bought the more customers there are to buy games

Do you have a link that confirms that ? I've worked in retail for long time before selling console hardware and have never seen yellow, red or white PS2's officially being sold here. The only colours other then black that I've seen are silver, pink, and light blue.

Unlight is correct the Limited Edition coloured PS2 (fat) where available for a very short time in the UK and the rest of Europe and only available to purchase online on the Sony Website. I remember myself looking at them on the Sony website and they were sold for more than ordinary PS2 (Fat) in Black at the time, Sadly cannot remember the price (Found it on google it sold for £280 at the time, I guess at the time the PS2 in Black was £199) but they sell for a small fortune on ebay when they popup now and again.

For some reason the range was know also as the 'European Automobile Colour Collection' and were available in Snow White, Super Red, Light Yellow, Astral Blue and Metallic Silver.

So they were available only on the Sony web site in limited numbers but not in regular retail locations. I think the only ones available in retail were the black, pink, silver and light metalic blue

I think Sony need to sort out the backwards compatibility, I was put off the high price of PS3 when launched, would buy one now... only I still want to play PS2 games and I refuse to give up the space for both consoles!

Come on Sony, sort it out!

I wouldn't hold your breath to be honest. The chances of backward compatibility being reintroduced in a future model are slim to non-existant. Your best bet would be to try and find one of the 60GB models and even then backward compatibility is only around 80%.

It makes me glad that the majority of my PS2 games collection is American and I have one of the original 60GB US models as backward compatibility is important to me.

They have, BC will not appear on any new European models IMHO. It is a minority market so there's no profit to invest for. I could be wrong but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
Its time to move on or be left behind.
