Hi
As the title states. Does the picture and sound qualitiy of the PS3 justify buying one to replace my std DVD player (denon dvd1920)?

Cheers

The PS3 does a decent job with Blu-ray but is a pretty poor SD DVD player and currently will not upscale SD DVD. I would keep your Denon for SD DVD.

I would also keep the Denon.

blu rays are a big step up from standard dvds on my set up

after watching blu rays i cant go back to an upscaled dvd

I think AVI and I are comparing the Denon as a DVD player against the PS3 as a DVD player.

playing standard dvds your player will look better than anything the ps3 can do

Thanks
for the advice. I am comparing the quality of blu-ray on the PS3 to the std DVD. I know this sounds silly but the as the PS3 is at heart a games console I just want to be sure it's a good step up over the Denon before I spend the cash.

Thanks

The perception of PQ will be determined as much by the display (type, res etc) and viewing distance etc as much as by the source. That's one of the reasons we seen so many different opinions re the difference between HD v SD.

I have a decent DVD transport together with a video processor and every HD DVD/BD version of a movie I've watched has been far superior to it's DVD counterpart IMO on both a 50" plasma and PJ. So in my setup the PS3 produces a far better image with Blu-ray than a £2k+ SD DVD setup.

The difference becomes even more noticeable as the screen size increases.

Sorry should have mentioned that it PS3 will be displayed via a native 720p projector and a 72" screen with a viewing distance of 10ft

thanks

You should see a noticeable difference i.e.fewer artefacts, cripser image, better detail due to there being more real image data available.

R2 SD DVD contains 414720 bits of real image data compared to BD's 2073600 bits of real image data. Your PJ has 869720 native pixels so with SD DVD 50%+ of the image is made up (interpolated) to fill the screen. Conversely with BD you’re using less than 50% of the available image data but it’s real data not made up.

Ps3 Blue ray vs standard boring SD (upscaled by Argos job or Denon bad boy)
there is no contest.
Watched Casino royale last night on my Ps3 and the Blueray version urinates all over the SD dvd in pq and audio. The feeling of height at the start of the film when bond is chasing the bad guy across the scaffolding is incredible. When the camera pans around the luxurious villas and when the building collaspes near the end, superb. That's why you buy into High definition.......no!
The audio don't get me started on that.I don't understand why people don't rave more about the new HD sound tracks.............me i love it.
Bonds PCM and Blackhawk downs track for example make the standard DD sound wimpy and struggling to be noticed in comparison. After watching HD movies on my Xe1 and Ps3 standard dvd just seems dull and boring.

just been round my mates to see his new ps3. its on a 37" LG lcd screen and i thought the pq on xmen3 was *****! i had a play for about half an hour with all the settings andi couldnt get it much better, the grain was terrible. was it the film or is that how bluray looks? ive got hddvd on my xbox360 running into a panny 42px70 plasma and mine wins hands down! i hope its his screen cus i wanted a ps3... gonna try and get him to bring it round and check it out myself but hes a fireman and hes quite busy.

Did you check what screen output the PS3 was set to?

To the original OP yes it is a step up from SD viewing.

i checked and rechecked and checked again, i spent half hour playing but couldnt get a good picture. turned things on and turned things off and tried different resolutions and tried all the setting on the tv, turning xd off on the tv helped a bit..... whats xmen 3 like for picture quality? i know from my own hddvds that pq can vary from disc to disc but it looked worse than normal dvds on my 360 and thats not upscaling!

From memory the disc is fairly grainy

Reviews for Xmen3 generally hover around the 4/5 for PQ on most sites, and all mention the grain was an inherent part of the theatrical presentation. There seem to be a lot of people complaining about grain since HD came along, so maybe it's the increased resolution that makes them notice it more than with SD.

Grain does not make a bad transfer if the original presentation included film grain. XMen3 was partly shot Super35 which is a process that generally leads to increased grain, so was a decision of the director and his DoP at the time.

To see a grain-free image, try something like Ice Age and let us know how that looks.

Try Casino Royale (from someone who was a anti next gen HD person). I tried it and at first I saw the night scenes and I thought to myself, "Ok, the picture is slightly better than a normal dvd, a bit more sharper etc", but then when I moved to a day scene, I litterly wet myself, I was just gob smaked, the picture was sooooooooooo "detailed" and pin sharp, there was no comparison with a normal dvd and this was viewed on a 30" LCD at 720p (so still not seeing the FULL Blue-Ray quality at 1080p).

I played Gladiator on SD-DVD that I had and i do have to say the picture was alright but a little dissapointing, hopefully Sony will allow the PS3 to upconvert normal DVD's in the future with a firmware update as xbox 360 does it.

It should be noted that the same Gladiator DVD look amazing on a £20 crap DVD player on a normal TV that I had (non-LCD), so I think this may be an LCD issue, as playing PS2 games also produced in not too good PQ on a LCD.
