The PS3 is on the way thanks to the very good price on shopto of £359.

What does the console come with?

Is there anything I need to get the most out of it on day one? I assume it comes with a component cable so I will probably pick a HDMI lead up at later date.

I'm more of an Xbox gamer really (sorry), but couldn't say no to £359 for for Metal Gear and Blu-Ray and any other exclusives that will come to PS3.

I'm a big FPS and Racing nut so I expect Resistance and Motorstorm are the games of the moment?

Sorry for all the noobish questions. :suicide:

    Hi Waynej

The PS3 does not come with a component cable, so either pick up a HDMI cable sooner or get yourself a component cable.

THe games you mentioned are great, but another racer that I also like is Ridge Racer 7, but be warned it is a pure arcade racer so don,t expect realistic handling or anything, but I enjoy it nonetheless:)

Also there's the GT:HD demo on PSN, if you do want to try some realism.

    Hope this helps mate.

K, well as I'm a "n00b" to PS3 can you recommend me where to buy a HDMI cable from for the best price?

Also what is the cheapest place to order PS3 games and Blu-Ray films from?

If there is anything else you think I should know?

    Cheers.

A £10 one HDMI cable Wollies will do, play.com usually are cheapest for games.

And it's just a matter of searching various web sites for cheap Blu-Ray Discs.

Now cheap doesn't mean worst does it? I'm known to be a bit fussy but I would assume they all do the same job.

-- Also I noticed people mention the Casino Royale blu ray film and getting that for free - I assume that is just launch orders or something or does Sony give this to everyone?

I ordered the HDMI cable from play.com at £11.99 - a gold plated Linksys one apparently on par witht he monster cables according to someone who reviewed it.

I've added some games and Blu-Ray movies to my rental list as top priority so hopefully I have something to play/watch when it arrives.

I assume the PS3 can play bog standard DVD's still?

I never got to play Metal Gear 3 or Res Evil 4 - are these fully back compatible on PS3 and do PS2 game saves go on the hard drive?

I'm sorry if I irritate anyone for what I'm sure may seem silly questions. :suicide:

Resi 4 is compatible as i have just started playing it, another must is God of War both stunning titles i missed out on, MGS3 i am not sure about and yes the ps2 game saves go to the HD
Yes it plays standard dvd's very well indeed regarding Blu-Ray you simply must buy/rent Kung Fu Hustle - simply a masterpiece the best film i have watched in years

Best thing to do Wayne is take a look at the various faq's in the PS3 forum as they will answer most of your questions then if you still need to know anything let us know.

Yeh, I rented Kung Fu Hustle ages back on DVD - class film. Just received World Trade Center HD DVD through now. I can't wait to see Ice Age 2 on Blu-Ray if its as good as the Scrat Trailer I downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace months ago then I will be very impressed.

Yeah I've been having a troll through. I'm just glad I found out about the console not coming with a HD cable. The thought of using the PS3 for a day with the awful composite connection would do my head in, I'm still surprised they don't include one in the box.

I ordered the HDMI cable from play.com and PS3 from shopto.com so fingers crossed both get posted first thing monday morning, I have not used play in a long time - are they quick enough to get something like that out quickly?

play are usually super fast with delivery... The only reason I got my order for NBA 2K7 delayed (£18 for a brand new PS3 title!) was that I used my student account card instead of my other one... Hence, no money!

Erm... Other than an HDMI cable, there's nothing you really *need* for the PS3... Unless you've got more than one controller, then get some mini-standard USB leads to charge em up... :)

I read somewhere before that you can reserve your username online, I;d like to do this whilst waiting for my PS£ to arrive. Anyone have a link or know where I must look to make my account - or must I wait for the console first?

How can you not know about Resistance? It's the only other game worth buying!

The way I see it, all you need is:
    1. The actual PS3 itself
    2. HD Ready TV, preferably with more than one HDMI slot
    3. WiFi connection in your house
    4. Only one additional controller, since "DualShock3" is on the way
    5. Bluetooth BD/DVD remote control
    6. HDMI cable
    7. Any compatible "mobile phone" bluetooth headset for speech on-line
    8. An SD card/Compact Flash card/Memory Stick/External USB2.0 Hard Drive should you want photos, movies and music on the PS3
    9. MotorStorm
    10. Resistance: Fall of Man

Shop around, you probably won't find the cheapest of each in one shop or website, use Google Products or KelKoo to get an idea of prices.

EDIT: You mentioned a USB harddrive so can a PS3 stream from that or does the content on the drive need to be transferred before playback?

Cheers for the list, yeh I know all about Resistance; I have purchased both Motorstorm and Resistance, ready and waiting.
I was just trying to see if I can set up a PSN ID online to reserve the tag for when the PS3 arrives?

My TV has one HDMI port, which is fine as its in my games room so if we ever need HDMI for some other device then that will go on TV in the living room (same TV in 2 diff rooms).
    Basically my current setup is
    VGA: Xbox 360
HDMI: Soon to be delivered PS3
Composite: Xbox (with Xbox Media Centre) I really need to import a component cable as it does look crap... though if PS3 play divx/xvid then I won't bother with Xbox1 anymore though even if PS3 does not playback those files then the new PC will when I get it, so its not something I'm overly concerned about atm.

Connections wise that leaves RF, S-video, 2 Scarts (1 RGB) and 2 Component inputs free.

My brother has a blutooth headset for his mobile, looks a bit crap though he used to like it - he doesn't use it anymore, so I'll test it out on PS3. Looks weird, imagine mini-headshaver on your ear... thats it lol

I do not have Wi-Fi nor am I too bothered about it, I could do with contacting AOL though as they give new members a free wireless router - so I can get one out of them if I can bothered to make the call.
