I know it's unusual to find someone praising the PS3 but I'm going to anyway.

I've aways been happy with my PS3 and thanks to some great games I was more than satisfied when I wanted a evenings play. I could have a quick blast on RFOM or Motorstorm, challenge a couple of mates to an online game of TW2007 or try and get past level 9 on Ninja Gaiden Sigma (still haven't :)).

I only started using it as media hub a few weeks ago when I had to put the PC upstairs in the spare room. I was previously using WMP11 to stream my media from my PC to my PS3 downstairs. Although it was ok it was a bit limited by the files it could use and for some reason it would loose the connection. I then tried Nero and this was better but seemed to take ages to stream anything to the PS3.

I finally gave Tveristy a try tonight and I wish I had done sooner. It streams all my music, photo's, and video without fail.

Now my biggest problem with the PS3 was that it would not play my Region One DVD's and as I put my multi-region DVD player in the bedroom I was going to purchase an upscaling multi-region DVD player so I can watch my imported films in glorious 1080p.

However, just as an experiment I though I would try and rip an imported DVD to my HDD on my PC and see if I can stream it to the PS3 with Tversity. I download a program called Magic DVD Ripper which can rip your DVD's to your HDD and also convert them into MPEG2, amongst other types, at the same time.

My first DVD was Spider-Man 2 (Superbit). I'm very pleased to say it worked. And thanks to Tversity being able to stream the video in HD it looks wonderful on my TV.

So I am now ripping the rest of my region one DVD's to my PC and then I can watch them through the PS3 in lovely 1080p resolution.

Thanks to Tversity and the PS3 being able to be used as a media hub I've saved myself about £150.

So I just wanted to give the PS3 a little bit of praise it deserves and although I bought it primarily as a games console and a Blu-Ray player, thanks to the media streaming capabilities it now serves all my media purposes.

    Thanks Sony :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

It took balls by SONY to release a console £100 more expensive than the Xbox. The Xbox has a huge lead in "Quality Games" at the moment but if you bought the PS3 primarily for it's Blu-Ray, as I did, then you have saved yourself lots of £££

Oh, and it plays games and is a media server too:D

you know what ? we are spoilt for choice because we have the Xbox360 , the Wii and the PS3:cool::cool::cool:

Yeah but if you don't want a Blu-Ray player like myself it's a complete rip-off!!!
What about people who want a games console?

It is a games console but it's also excellent at playing blue ray movies and upscales dvds and..........................everything else it can do.

If you just want a dedicated games console then jump onto the Nintendo bus or even better have both like me - more choices guaranteed.

Believe me, wait for Killzone 2, and then you will know why it is important for the PS3 to have a Bluray drive in it. This will no doubt be the start of games developers making full use of higher optical disc capacities for their games. Of course, they won't be able to do that (easily) on XBox 360.

Having a Bluray drive won't JUST be for movies in the future.

    No it's not.........
A lot of the games that are coming out on the PS3 are going to take advantage of the Blu-Ray drive..........Having a larger disc capacity means that the games can have more maps with a higher quality and a higher quantity of textures........Have a look at Haze, Unreal Tournament 3 and Killzone 2........Killzone 2 maps can be around 2Gb each.So you could only fit 2 or 3 on a DVD........With Unreal Tournament the developers have said that the PS3 and PC versions will have more content than the 360, because they can't get everything on to a DVD for the 360.........Free Radical have also said that Haze, as it is, wouldn't have been possible without them being able to take advantage of the Blu-Ray storage capacity........
The Blu-Ray drive may not have been used to anything like its capacity in the games that we have seen on the PS3 so far, but that looks like its going to change in the very near future.........So I for one am glad the PS3 has got a Blu-Ray drive.......Even if Sony only put it in so they could push the BD film format over HD-DVD....

I agree - the PS3 is a magic box that keeps on giving.

Simply considering the additional £40 per year XBLive subs, and wireless internet (regardless of the qualtiy of the overall PS3 package vs. the noisy, overheating, and "add another beige box" integration of the XB360), the PS3 can easily match the value of the 360 as a games machine.

As games selection, I won't have any problem in finding games to play on it. The major constaint for me is time and money.

I too think that the hardware is a quality bit of kit. I mainly purchased it to play BD's but have been enjoying the AAA PS2 titles and a few of the PS3 titles. As a few posters have commented above i believe that we will eventually start to see the benefits of the BD drive for games as well

For those of you not knowing this Acronym.... simply means

    IN BEFORE THE LOCK!

I give this about another 5 replies.

Does it really matter what console you buy if you are happy with it, then just be happy.

As I haven't posted for a while, thought I would add my two groats worth.

I bought a PS3 a couple of weeks back and this is the 1st console that I have ever bought so I have nothing to compare it with.

I bought it primarily for BD playback (and I am also probably going to buy a HD-DVD player as well to go format neutral as well as new amp - will this madness ever end?).

I have to say that as a BD player I thought it was excellent, good sharp pictures with more depth of field, bright colours - TBH more than I was expecting. Okay, the games selection wasn't great, I got Formula One (6/10) and RidgeRacer (BIG Mistake) as my free games but I tend to play strategy games more than others and these are better played on a PC anyway (IMHO). I did download GT HD from the interweb and apart from the fact that I found the controls a bit sensitive for my liking, thought it looked superb - if this is an example of what HD games are going to look like then I suspect my partner will now see even less of me (I would add at this point that HD does not make a good game, gameplay is just as important!).

I liked the fact that once I got my wireless network running upstairs and the PS3 and Vista PC hooked up I could use the PS3 as a media server.

I have now added over a 100 hours to my projector run time in the last fortnight with films, games and general mucking about.

Am I happy - yes. Was it money well spent - probably. Will I buy more PS3 games - you bet. Am I considering a WII - sadly, yes!

    Cheers,
    Iain

I wish there was a subforum for the media server abilities like there is games, clans etc.. there's certainly a lot of scope for it and despite lots of frustrations along the way, when it does work it works pretty damned well.

I bought my PS3 as a blu-ray player, I have a x360 as well and thats my first choice for games, but now if there's something thats better/exclusive to PS3 I've at least got that choice. Both consoles have their strong points and weaknesses (my first gripe was the lack of HDMI or Component cable in the box when I bought it at 8pm on a Saturday, had to put up with an evening via Composite on a 50" HDTV. Chilling stuff.)

Geez, yeah...and you'd think if there was anywhere they should be allowed to post looking for "mutual reassurance", without having to put up with sarcasm and patronising, it would be a PS3 forum.

    Go figure.

Let's not have another one of those PS3 vs. 360 arguments. It seems like every few days someone starts a thread and it ends up going downhill because people can't resist starting or contributiing to such a silly argument. It looks like this thread is going that way too. If it doesn't get back on track and continues that way then some form of action will be taken. Time to get back on topic please. Thanks.

The PS3 is a great machine, as is the 360. I have them both and I enjoy them both, although the PS3 is taking more of my time due to the "newness".

What would I like for both?

    PS3:
    Gamerstats like XBOX live
nicer console "front-end" as its a bit basic; I can understand it on the PSP as its portable, but not on a "proper" console
    rumble function
    IR remote control
    bundled HDMI cable
    reduced size
    larger selection of games
support for wired headsets through the wireless controller

    360:
    Reliability
    Free online play
    Internet browser
    Reliability
    Reduced noise
HDMI (yes, I know about the Elite and Halo 3 version)
    Reliability ;)

I haven't mentioned HD DVD vs Blu-Ray - but I was gobsmacked with the PQ when I first watched Casino Royale. I see this as an extra that people will either take or leave.

Now, as for the Wii, its sitting there all neglected. I do regret buying that, until we have a family get-together!

I suppose the point of my rambling post is that we all like different things and for me, I agree with the OP as the "PS3 just gets better for me :)"

My intention was never to start another flame war. (I see the above post has been deleted.)

In fact I never mentioned the 360 in my post at all. I've never used a 360 so I cannot and would not comment on it.

I would have though that this forum would be the place where mature people could express there opinions without silly comments about which is better and threads descending into a flaming match, I get enough of that on the PS3 forum.

I wouldn't worry about it mate, some people just seem to enjoy trawling through these forums looking for an opportunity to make a smarta**e remark for the sake of it.

You are in the ps3 forum, which is the ideal place for extolling the ps3's virtues and highlighting it's positives. keep it up!

I posted a similar thread to this a few months ago and a month later sold it and bought a 360.

I totally agree with your post but got fed up waiting for the games and when they did appear they were very poor copies of 360 games.

The bottom line, I will buy a PS3 and sell my 360, the PS3 has everything I want except games at the moment but what a fantastic media centre in a box. But it won't be just yet because of my issue with games.

I love my 360 but it lacks all the future promise of the PS3.

The perfect machine will be seen in 12 months.....I believe you already have it my friend.

    Great post BTW.:hiya:

The problem is people said exactly the same about Resistance, then Lair and Heavenly Sword. I really don't think capacity is a big deal. Best case scenario we may see some bigger games or more maps, but then most devs have strict deadlines and a strict budget. Heck they'd rather get the game out, then make money with DLC.

Fixed. ;) When Sony themselves say it'll be "4, 5 or 6 years" before we see the true potential of PS3, I struggle to get excited. We'll be considering the next Xbox by then.

That's exactly right mate! At last an unbiased comment. Saying that Blu-Ray will make games better is just a 'carrot on a stick' ploy by Sony to justify forcing Blu-Ray players onto people. By the time Blu-Ray is trully exploited for games the PS3 will be very late on in its life! Much easier to port games to the PS3 and make some money.

Yes that post was deleted... at my request.

It was meant to be, and seemed at the time, to be a humorous observation and jokey comment on the way that such threads tend to run rather than the swipe that some took it as  Bad humour day or bad writing I guess so apologies to anyone who took umbrage at the comment.

To be fair, I didn't say that Bluray will make games better. I said, you will see, in Killzone 2, why there is a need for the PS3 to have Bluray.

Console prices drop...you dont have to buy one on launch day when they are at there most expensive so that's a lame excuse...and what about the people who DO want a blu ray player in their console, it works both ways.

I think everybody knew before they purchased a PS3 that it had a blu ray player in it and that was why it was initially expensive. Nobody is forcing anything, if you are so strict against blu ray, whatever, whatever, then you can CHOOSE not to buy it.
All 3 consoles this gen have gone completely different ways and that is why I own and love all 3.

It still amazes me why that everyone thinks its expensive.
The PS2 sega saturn ect where all similar price when the first launched. I know loads of people who have paid well over £500 to upgrade there pc to play games on.

When you get a good Blu Ray player, good games console, media server, dvd upscaler, internet all in one box for little over £400 its got to be good value, at the end of the day what else is on the market at that price that does all that.

We all have our choices to buy or not to buy.

Can you turn the PS3 on with the IR dongle or do you still need the joy pad?

No IR at all. You need the bluetooth remote asfar as I know.

I have a Harmony too, so it would be nice if it worked.

I'm pretty happy with mine too. Just waiting for some more nice games to come out. I'm beginning to think that Sony's choice of Blu-Ray may have been the correct one - I'm seeing more Blu-Rays in stores than HD-DVDs. I have an HD-DVD player too, so don't favour one over the other, but it looks like some poeple must be.
