Hi, sorry if I sound stupid or this thread is in wrong place but I am a bit of a noob in terms of AV.

Last year is was so simple, Had cheap but effective all in one system, DVD player came with 5.1 surround speaker set-up lovely. Now I have HDTV and a PS3, so I dont rent DVD's anymore "so old hat" No its blu-rays now. And I love the picture quality, but I dont have any surround sound anymore as the speakers wire directly to the dvd player you see.

What I want is something I can plug the PS3 into thats gives me surround sound. THe PS3 has an optical output and a coax and HDMI.

I think I am right in saying HDMI is best, so is there somthing which I can plug the HDMI cable from the PS3 into to give me surround sound, which intern then has an HDMI output to got to the TV for me HD picture. Also I am getting HD sky in a few months so want second input for that really, dont want to be unplugging HMDI cables all the time.

This product says it has two HDMI inputs and One output, which sounds to me like what I need, but none of the advertising/technical specs help me tell if the functionality i require is possible.

I would post this in the AV Amps Forum.

The PS3 outputs sound either via HDMI or it's optical output.

However, if you choose to go down the optical output you will only get 5.1 surround sound (Phantom 6.1 or 7.1 if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 setup).

If you go via HDMI you will be able to true 6.1 and 7.1. Now i'm not sure about this but, my understanding is that if you have a 5.1 set up then there is no benefit to you with the true 6.1. 7.1

However, what I am very sure about is that just because an amp has an HDMI input, it does not mean that the Amp can accept true 6.1 or 7.1. So you need to be very carefully.

Also not sure again here[/B I doubt very very much you will be able to purchase an amp within you budget that will accept true 6.1 or 7.1 sound.

From what you have said, I would suggest you look at the Cambridge Audio 560R v3. This amp will provide you excellant sound and music production allows you to move upto 6.1 if you like, will accept sound via the PS3 ptical out and, if you have more than 1 HD device is has two in one out HDMI switching.

Good luck but, like I say, I suggest you post in the AMPs forum
