I know this has probably been covered before, but can anyone clarify for my thick head please?

Am connecting the PS3 to the Onkyo 605 (which plays trueHD and uncompressed etc) via HDMI and I can't decide between choosing bitstream or Linear PCM on the PS3 audio options - I think that PCM sounds better but I am not sure - assume the PCM lets the Amp decode the sound whereas bitstream does the decoding - am I right ???

Many thanks for any replies, am sure a few people may be wondering the same. :smashin:

Other way around. PCM does decoding on the PS3 and Bitstream does it on the amp. Personally I much prefer bitstream.. PCM sounds flat and front heavy to me (although PCM soundtracks on bluray are fine).

There are about 50 threads on this already, btw. Search is your friend!

Put it to Bitstream to let the Amp do the work but for Blu ray disc's with TrueHD put it to PCM.

The PS3 should do the PCM automatically when it needs to (need to check this, I got my first truehd Bluray the other day but haven't had chance to play it, but since it can't pass the bitstream it should).

Thanks for this - another question then, if I set the PS3 as bitstream and then try and play a truehd soundtrack through it, will it not sound as good as it should?

Leave the Setting on Bitstream so that your amp will decode normal Dolby Digital and DTS tracks and the PS3 will internally encode Dolby True HD to PCM when required.

No need to keep changing back and forth
