PS3 DVD on 428 XD, should it fill the screen ?

Probably a dumb question but I'm wondering whether I've got the PS3 settings correct.
Games are playing full screen, but Blu-Ray Casino Royale, planet Earth and older SD DVD's are not playing full screen. Is this correct ? I have 1080p,1080i ,720p all checked in the PS3 HDMI settings.

this is correct. movies are filmed in a narrower aspect than conventional tv so you get black bars top and bottom. the screen is just playing them back as the director intended them to be watched.

You can usually tell if a film will fill the screen or not by looking at the aspect ratio on the box. If it is 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 then you will get black bars on the top and bottom. If they are 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 they should fill the screen or thereabouts.

Ok that's a good tip, thanks
