Im looking to possibly replace my media PC sitting under my TV, with a PS3. I currently only use the PC to play movies streamed off my network and maybe access some online material via iplayer.

Most of the files are either divx, mkv, mp4 or ripped DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray VOBS.

Is the PS3 able to handle all of these formats, either in its standard media player mode or via a Linux install?

    thanks

Short answer would be yes, especially as you'll be streaming.

Closing thread. There are plenty of threads dealing with media playback including the one stickied at the top of this page.
