so, from what i understand you cant simply install osX on the ps3 with the installer disc.....
so why does the ps3 have the option 'install other OS'.. in the menu... what other operating system is suppose to run on the ps3?

if i could get osx on the ps3 that would be amazin'... i was going to be buying a mac mini ( i work on macs everyday ) so this would save me some serious coin!

    Errrrm:confused:

Your in the PS3 Linux forum. Isn't that a big enough clue?

You can't install OSX on a PS3 because its illegal to install OSX on non-Apple branded hardware.

My understanding is you can install any OS that is supposed to work with the PS3.
At the moment YDL is one of those, maybe at a later stage there will be others.
From my breif experince unless you really know your stuff and are a hard core Linux fan dont bother with YDL.

Is isn't an operating system designed for the PS3 so I very much doubt it.

YDL was the easiest of all the Linux versions I installed on my PS3, it mainly auto installs itself.

Which also begs the question. Why on earth would you want to put an old, dated, unsupported OS like Mac OS 8 or 9 on your PS3 in the first place? Also like I said before. No Mac OS versions can legally be installed on non-Apple hardware.

You may be able to get a PPC version of OSX Tiger installed on your PS3 with some work and hacking but I very much doubt you will have enough driver support to get it working anyway.

Indeed, installing YDL was easy but getting anything else simple like Java installed was totally over my head.
Windows makes it easy, you just click on something to install it.
When I tried to install something in Linux it said you had to do it in command prompts etc and that just lost me.

What I've read, is Apple and Sony said OSX could run on the PS3, but maybe there still working on something for a future firmware update.

Old version of the mac os ran on powerpc chips only. Newer version of OSX run on Intel and PowerPC chips, since Apple made the switch from IBM processors to Intel. The PS3 uses a cell processor.
OSX also only runs on Mac hardware, and includes the nessary drivers to enable their hardware to run (+ general stuff like digital cameras, usb devices, etc).
They are going to have to do a hell of a lot of work to get it to work on a PS3.
Cant see it happening at all. They wont even let non Apple machines work with OSX (ok some people have 'hacked' version of OSX to allow it to kinda work on their generic PCs).
Why would Apple allow OSX to run on PS3s? It would stop people buying Apple hardware (where they make most of their money) since they could use their PS3 instead.

Its says 'install other os' in the menu, rather than linux, cos you have the option of installing any supported os. OSX, WindowsXP, etc isnt one of them.

The reason it says 'install other OS' is because that's what you can do, installa nother OPERATING SYSTEM. That's what the OS stands for in OS-X.
