shall i go forward with it ?? or wait til i get a 50 inch screen and 1080p.

Do it. It'll look fantastic mate :smashin:

Don't get too hung up on 1080p, you might notice a difference at those screen sizes but I reckon you'll be more than happy running a 42" 720p Plasma.

PS3 on 42" Pio looks amazing. :) Unless you have really big screen and sit really close to it I doubt you'd notice that much difference between 720 & 1080p.

If you already have a 42" 720p screen then its only the cost of a HDMI cable to make it look significantly better. If you're thinking 'should I go with 42 or 50' then that really is your decision entirely.

I agree with others that the difference will be very little to the untrained eye and you will be significantly more impressed at 720p then you would with a standard cable!

    Enjoy whatever you choose!

40"+ go with a screen capable of 1080p - it'll be worth it in the long run when the next batch of consoles come out all running games at native 1080p (saving you going out and buying a new telly!)

but anything under 40" for console gaming i'd say stick with 720p.

as mentioned previously - if you're running a ps3 on an standard def telly, you need to upgrade. But it must be said that as enthusiasts, we're always going to say that.

For example I have a mate who got a ps3 for xmas along with a HD tv. Last week I went round and he had the thing running at 576i when his tv was capable of displaying 720p. He didn't seem to mind....(I almost blew a fuse though :p)

I would say the same, if you are debating this now before you have even bought the screen you will probably be thinking the same thing after you buy the TV and will might be wondering if you have made the right decision, so I would say save up a bit more and get the TV that you will be happy with whenever you buy it.

It's just like any technology, do I buy a cheap surround system which does the bare minimum, or do I save up a bit for one that will provide more value as it'll see me through more years.

It's a recurring theme on avforums in general.

indeed! Totally agree... "future proof" is an over-used and fairly meaningless term, but i'm of the opinion it's best to try to get something that'll last a few years at least. :D

re the OP: what's the question? Go forward with getting a ps3 or go forward with getting a 42" 720p plasma?

As said above, hd looks miles better than standard def, whether it's 720p or 1080p. General consensus seems to be that the difference between the two hd resolutions on 40" screens or less isn't that noticeable. :smashin:

I've got a 720p 42inch plasma. Bit hard to say whether you should or shouldn't do it as there is more than one factor.

If I'm honest my telly is a little too big for my viewing distance so I can detect a tiny bit of grain in the picture. If it was 1080p then I wouldn't. However I've got a pretty good plasma so I would have to trade quality for resolution (based on same price paid). I can still see a pretty resonable difference between blueray and upscaled DVD (which looks great compared to standard dvd) but the difference is obviously more pronounced on a 1080p set.

For a 50 inch unless you are sat resonably far away I would probably recommend 1080p.

Both ps3 and 360 are really 720p gaming systems neither can do much in the way of 1080p games and most games are 720p at best with many, many games actually being lower than 720p. Obviously for blu-ray the ps3 can display full 1080p visuals but at 42" unless your quite close you won't see the difference. 50" or projectors is where the true benefit of 1080p starts unless your really close.

720p and 1080p look identical on a Sharp Aquos 42" I have tested the ps3 out on.

But what are you trying as source material? Are you trying games at native 720p and comparing with 1080p upscaled? Or are you trying something like WipeoutHD at 1080p and comparing with 720p. Or are you trying blu ray?

I certainly notice significant improvements on my 42 Pana 1080p when watching native 1080p material at about 7 feet.

I was trying a native 720p game with 1080p upscaled. Sorry if there is a difference with games such as Wipeout HD, but most games I do not see a difference. I can't comment on blu ray as I am still buying DVD's and not blu ray atm.

Its cool mate, I was not having a go, just asking . You probably wont see much of a difference on up scaled games (ie native 720p > 1080p), but you probably will on WipeoutHD as its 1080p and 60FPS!!

I think that game is next on my list of purchases. I love a good futuristic racer. Never played Wipeout before though... always used to be a Nintendo guy before this generation of consoles, so I've played F-Zero but not Wipeout. I've heard it is really hard though.

Edit: @ Jack-Deth, do you know how to stop oneself from being emailed everytime a reply is posted in a thread?

Thanks dude. I knew it was something to do with suscribing to threads as I've seen someone asking about this very same problem on a forum I'm a regular at. Just didn't know which part of the forum you access features like that, as I'm new to this forum. Hopefully I'll be a regular though, looks a nice, active forum this does.

Actually, if you go to "Edit Options" which is halfway down on the left hand side of the "control panel" you can select to not be emailed any time you get involved in a thread..

Haha, If your looking for a tense area, check out the 360 hardware area, as you can imagine, their consoles are breaking down every other day so it can pretty angry there
