At the moment I watch DVDs through my PS2 but as my collection has grown I have started to consider getting a budget DVD player to do the job instead.

My question is this: how much would I need to spend to get a worthwhile improvement over the PS2 (running with latest DVD drivers from Sony's remote)?

    Thanks forr your help.

I'd say at least 200 quid, otherwise the difference will not be noticeable.

Are you looking to change for any good reason? or just cause you want to, If you have the remote and RGB cable I wouldn't bother But a £150-£200 machine might give you more options. a sub £100 machine is unlikely to be an improvement.

Replacing that Playstation for DVD duties will bring HUGE improvements. Especially if you opt for a machine such as Toshiba's SD220E, which is available for £99.99 from www.richersounds.com. Or even better still opt for a Progressive Scan capable machine such as Toshiba's SD520E (which also sports DVD-A), also available from Richer Sounds for just £149.95.

Didn't know the Tosh was so cheap in the UK, lucky Brits :)

I'll have to agree, either one of the Toshiba's would far surpass the PS2 with DVDs.

I would also consider the Sony DVP-NS305 or NS405 if I were you. Great players and yet also quite cheap.

I have a multiregion Toshiba 100E in my bedroom and it is vastly superior to my PS2 (especially the region one discs which the ps2 is particularly poor at playing).
I bought it years ago, but I think you can get them dirt cheap now, and as Dimmy says, the Tosh 220 is a good bet too.
