I can't make my mind up on which one to buy.
The PS2 has a large catalogue of good software and is very popular but no in game dolby digital sound.
The X Box doesn't seem to be selling that well in Japan and not
exactly breaking records in Europe.Doesn't have a very exciting
line up of software but may get better, has in game dolby digital
    sound.
Also, Sony has a lot of experience in the console market this is
Microsofts first attempt. I'm worried if I go for the X Box it ends
up like the Saturn & Dreamcast.
What does the experienced gamer think?
    regards,
    G.M.

There is no "best" console. It all depends on the type of games you want to play. Don't buy a console simply for Dolby Digital sound because it really doesn't have the same impact as it does in movies. I own all three consoles and each was purchased according to the individual games that appealed to. XBOX had Halo, PS2 has a good back catalogue now but it has taken a long time. Gamecube has the classic Nintendo franchises to look forward to - games that will probably never be equalled on any other console. Try and decide what games appeal to you most and then it should become a simple decision. None of the aforementioned consoles will fade away any time soon.

That is good advice from groundy they all have there good points.
From a personal note if I had to choose one of the three I couldn,t You must buy a GC and a Xbox

Nintendo do make the best games in the world no one can argue with that and it has got of to a very good start.
The GC is also very very powerfull and can match any console currently available.

I also love my Xbox and you are right about DD5.1 it does make a big difference in games especially halo.
The Xbox will not be another saturn 3DO or atari jaguar.
Microsoft are a company that will do anything for the Xbox to succeed and it will.

This is not a answer to cause a mine is better than yours argument so do not reply if that is what you think.

    Happy Gaming

    Thanks for the replies guys.
The main worry I have about the X box, is it's poor sales in Japan.
As you know, this is where the main software developers are and
they may decide it's not worth developing software for the X box,
they may just concentrate on the Gamecube & PS2.
    regards,
    G.M.

It's likely that things will pick up in Japan but the XBOX will probably never achieve the same degree of popularity over there as the likes of Nintendo/Sony/Sega. If you're interested in games from the main Japanese developers such as Capcom, Square, Konami, Namco, Nintendo, Sega, (and who wouldn't be :) ) then your best bet is undoubtedly a Ps2 or Gamecube.

Maybe you haven't set your xbox or home cinema correctly?
Set xbox to squirt out 5.1 via optical link. And amp to auto detect
    this.

I play halo on my set up and sure the sound doesn't have the same
impact as a movie eg The Matrix, but the xbox dolby digital sound
    is DEFINITELY worth considering when
    purchasing a console.
I could go on for ages abt the how it makes halo sound so
amazing but everyone knows this! The games A.I, gfx, sound
it all works so well together.

But your right abt Game Cube though.... it's worth getting ..
with it's cheaper price point... it makes the option for buying
another console all the more charming!

I can assure you, I have my Home Cinema set up correctly with 5.1 from the XBOX. Halo works very well in Dolby Digital and obviously it's preferably to Stereo/ProLogic. I suppose it's an objective issue - I wouldn't consider a console or a particular game just because it offers DD sound (or not). Off course it's nice to have and it adds to the experience but to me, it's nowhere near as important as DD in movies. There's so much more to a game or console than the sound format, whereas the sound format is integral to a movie. This is why I always choose DTS DVD's over 5.1 regardless of special features etc.

I was pointing out that games from the major Japanese developers listed above is more important to the original posters decision making than the tech specs of one particular console over another. :)

    Couldn't agree more Groundy.

Until game developers get the hang of the 'on the fly' 5.1 sound creator kit on X Box, it's not going to anything more than just 'great'.
True, Halo does sound great, but playing it on a standard Nicam set is just as good, simply because it's a great game!
With movies it's different, i first watched the Bone Collector on a friends modest 21" Nicam tv, ok film, didn't really take much notice. That was until i borrowed it and subsequently became flabbergasted by the stunning DTS 6.1 Matrix soundtrack - it was unbelievable, and i always try and get a dts disc over it's 5.1 Dolby counterpart now.
So indeed Groundy, your argument is a good one and one i'll back up wholeheartedly.
For me, listening in Dolby Pro Logic 2 gives the best immersion from games with its tighter soundstaging, the X Box seems too distracting rather than the sound being a 'whole', it's too much left corner, then front right, rather than - ****! Where the hell did that go!

Excuse the long post, had to get my point across thats all

exactly that's why i bought the xbox becasue i wanted this
feature to be include in my next generation console.
the other consoles don't have this feature. it's very sad though
as it really helps.. mgs2 on the ps2 sound amazing during it's movies sequences
but when the game starts... the sounds goes "flat"
which is dissapointing as it's a goood game and could do with 5.1 sound.

I guess future xbox games need to use the 5.1 sound
feature a lot more so that it becomes a basic requirment!

I was esp wowed when playing RalliSport Challenge and i noticed
how i could "feel" the cars coming up behind me..either to my
left or right....and when a car smashed into my side u could hear the right back speaker going bonkers.

True, Halo does sound great, but playing it on a standard Nicam set is just as good, simply because it's a great game!

I don't think it's just as good?how can playing it on the tvs built in
speakers be just as good as a dedicated 5.1 setup? it doesn't make sense!
i find playing it on my 36'' widscreen with 5.1 speakers system,
is better than playing it on a standard nicam telly, the sound, the
large screen its just amazing. Hearing the aliens creeping up from the
back far left or right ..really makes u feel u're being surrounded.
if u don't know what the aliens are saying..have a peep at this

I just use pl2 for non dolby digital sources ..like video tapes, eastenders!!! ;)
If you setup u're sepakers corectly it shouldn't be a problem.
Maybe the sound pressure from u're front speakers might be greater than the ones from the back.

Believe me,i know a lot about home cinema and 5.1 sound! I just feel that, what REALLY matters in a game is the gameplay, no matter how good it looks or sounds, it's how it stimulates the senses that counts. My system is professionaly calibrated, and is very unforgiving of less than perfect sources, like some of the X Box titles!
I'm not slagging these games, it's just that some people get off on the good graphics, great sound thing, and then the main point of the whole experience - the gameplay - is all but forgotten for the sake of a few million polygons and 6 channels of sound.
Kudos to Microsoft for adding that extra bit of realism to their games, but it will never replace good old fashioned gameplay in my book!

    My system;

    Denon AVC A11SR THX amplifier
    Acoustic Energy Aegis 3/Centre
    2 Yamaha YSTW320 subwoofers
    4 x Mission 77DS surrounds
    Toshiba 32Z09B Widescreen Tv
    Sony DVPS900 DVD/SACD PLAYER
    X Box
    Dreamcast
    Super Nintendo
and other stuff like a Sony Minidisc Recorder etc.....

    Hi Army Bloke

I could take pgr off you for dvds and cash if u like, it's not for me
it's for a friend of mine (a recent ps2 convert).
Or I could buy it off you for £25
I don't think i have the patience for car games, yet!

I'm not sure what i want for Max Payne, going rate for 2nd hand games seems to be £30. And there's nothing i want to swap it for.
Only games remaing are skating type games and they make me dizzy, esp the awesome jsrf.

Let me know what you think is best.

    Cya,
    Shaz

Well I've got JSRF as well but I don't think my 13 year old son would forgive me for getting rid of it. I don't really want the DVD's you offered I'm afraid but really wouldn't mind Max Payne.

Couldn't you trade me MP for PGR and then sell it to your mate? Just a thought.

I was promised minimum £25 part ex on games when I brought my XBox from Game. I took THPS3 in the other day and they offered me £15!!! . They then go on and sell them for £29.99 making 100% profit.

They had a second hand MP for that price but I didn't buy it as I thought I was in with a shot of getting yours!;)
