Sorry if this has been answered before but just managed to scrape enough money together to plump for one of these. Prob is went to buy a PS2 and saw a demo X-Box and thought it looked great. One of the things I am most looking forward to is using the DD5.1 capabilities, not sure if X-Box has (can someone confirm) but the main Question is which do I go for, does the extra capabilities of the X-Box outweigh the greater number of games available to PS2 owners ?
Any help or comments would be appreciated.

To be honest there are some..but not a huge amount of good ps2 games......the X box will take about 6 months before it has a comparable line up of games....but it is far more powerful, will have a lot of good pc ports....and you get a hard drive for your money. Regards the X Box as a closed box pc with a very powerful graphics card...pc gaming without the need to download patches....heaven.
I already own a ps2...very good console...some great games...but most of my favourites will be ported over to X box...Grand Theft Auto, Silent Hill 2....and Max Payne is far better on the X Box......
Also the release games for X Box are better than release games for ps2....in my view that is good news for future of X Box.....
One thing though...do not write off the GameCube.....
    Best regards

They both do DD5.1 for DVD playback but only the XBox is capable of DD5.1 for games( PS2 can only do 5.1 during FMV on games).

A lot of games will be cross ported so you will be able to buy them on any of the three consoles.

However there is some games that are now being developed for Hard Drive use only like Project Ego.

If you like Multiplayer Games I would recomend the Xbox because of the Voice Chat System and games like Bounty Hunter, although on the PC you have Voice as well now, but it can be a hit and miss affair (I can't get Voice Chat on Counter Strike :( )

BTW You will need Broadband Internet for Xbox Multiplayer Online

    Anne
Will gladly play Xbox Online with anyone in this forum if they don't mind losing :D

PS2 can do DTS during games so why can't it do DD5.1?

Tough question. If you had asked six months ago I would have said wait for the XBox as I was very disappointed with the PS2 lineup. However, GTA III, ISS Pro and Devil May Cry have changed my attitude somewhat. The PS2 is significantly cheaper so you can get a number of top games with it for the same price as your XBox.

However, lots of games will be on both system and the likelihood is that they will be better on XBox - look at Max Payne on PS2. Personally, I think it is a little too much like a PC so won't be getting one.

You didn't mention the Gamecube. £149 and games like Mario, Perfect Dark and Zelda that you will only be able to play on Nintendo. I have an import GC and it rocks.

But, keep in mind that the hard drive is already included in the X-Box. In my opinion, that (plus the beefier hardware and sound capabilities) more than makes up for the price difference.

The simplest (and maybe in the long run, cheapest) way is to buy both machines and put a strict limit on the amount of games you buy. You know, that sort of borderline purchase that sits unplayed for months would be left in the shops and you save £35-£40 a go. Five of these babies and you've got a free PS2!

Also it puts you in the enviable position of being able to sit out all the childish "my console's better than yours" arguments.

Add a Gamecube and you're in pole position.

I'm in the same boat and am going for the Xbox. The demos I have seen kick the PS2 into touch. Can't quite bring myself to go Nintendo. I think the DVD player is better on the XBOX too, good enough to be used if you don't have one. Also the fact that it has hardware to do 5.1 as opposed to the PS2 which has to do it in software is an advantage.

I guess you'll be pleased with either. I'm still on a PSX so it'll be a step up whatever I get.

I'm plumping for both: I've already got a PS2 which is worth its price just for GTA3: and I've had a lot of fun with balder's gate and devil may cry too.

Halo is so good its worth getting an Xbox for on its own ( if you can afford it obviously) and there are at least a couple of decent titles available from release day to interest when Halo gets stale.

How do you explain SSX Tricky which clearly outputs DTS during the game?

I am the worng person to ask as i already have the PS2 and will be getting the X-Box and Cube as well. However if i had to chose one, i would get the PS2 as it is the one that can be chipped, ergo cheap games until next christmas, in which case there will be a price drop in the X-box. I doubt the Cube will drop significantly in price as they have already ****ed off retail multiples by setting RRP at £150. There are rumours going round that some of the big chains might refuse to stock it at that price. Too small margins. Anyway go for the PS2 as you can get it chipped.

The PS2 can play games in DD5.1 and DTS. SSX is a good example as already pointed out. My amp clearly recognises the signal as a DTS input and it sounds great, so no more saying the PS2 does not do this please

I thought the PS2 could only output 5.1 during cut scenes.

The X-box does 5.1 decoding in hardware whereas the PS2 does it in software

EA seem to have found an efficient way to do real-time DTS encoding in software. I'm not sure, but perhaps the reason they can do this for DTS, but not DD is that DTS is less compressed.

Ordinarily DTS is less compressed than DD - as proved by the lack of space on R2 DVD's for a DTS soundtrack once all the languages are included. As SSX Tricky is DTS 'Interactive' maybe it's a lower bit rate to enable its real time decoding. All 6 channels are active as well so it's clever stuff by EA.

If you're *really* into games, you'll need all three at some point. But for now either PS2 or Xbox will be a good choice, with PS2 being a bit safer than Xbox.

I agree about restricting the number of games you buy. You can go even further by renting. There are plenty of games that you can complete in a weekend or two and you have no desire to revisit, so renting is a cheap way to do that.

And trade in any game that you've bought but won't play again.

Then buy all three. In this order

    PS2 or Xbox
    Gamecube
    Xbox or PS2

I have ordered an X Box but I don't think anyone would argue that the PS2's future is assured no matter what happens to the X Box. Sony have the run on the X Box and I still have only seen one X Box advert yet I have seen dozens on PS2 ad's, in the last couple of weeks alone. Come on Microsoft.

The penetration of the PS2 has already created great success for Sony. How the PS3 goes with the X Box2 now that could be interesting.

I have been checking the US Site for future games development for the X Box and I am slightly concerned as there does not appear to be any real excitement for future X Box games.

Only time will tell and hopefully my investment pays off.

    Regards

Thank God for the Xbox... I'm so glad i didn't buy a ps2 last summer.
I'm going to collect my xbox tommorow from Electonics
    Boutique : http://www.eb.uk.com/

I can't beleive it..in all the electric \ computer stores in my area (essex) everyone going xbox crazy.
And they can't wait till 14th they want it today 13th!! LOL
And I thought I was the only one.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the xbox over the ps2,
the only people that I've spoken to that are in 2minds abt ps2
& xbox are the ones that bought it last xmas. As they really can't afford to pay for another console
or are quite satified with the current line up of what i consider mediocre games.

The xbox is significantly cheaper than the ps2. Where I work I
know 4 people that own ps2's. And they all feel "stung" by Sony.
As they paid £300 for theirs.
By the the time u add the cost of a hard drive(how much? £50 to £100) , broad band interface,
multi-tap and other bits of clutter that the ps2 needs. It'll costs much more than the xbox.
So why be cruel to yourself?

I'm actually looking fotward to the next 2 years of unbridled of
top-grade game play. And am very excited for when the ps3 to
come out whenever it is! Consideringhow much time I have at
home for enterainment I'm very satisfied with the line up of
xbox games from now till end of this year. I only want the BEST
I will be buying either 3 or 4 games tommorow,

    -dead or alive 3
    -jet set radio future
    -halo
-max payne (my bro has a fetish for shooting with 2 guns!)

So I'm firing up my Denon AVC A11SR ready for outstanding
cinema surround sound and I'll be watching it on my 36'' widescreen.

I have booked the rest of this week off from work!
boo hoo hoo .. life is so cruel to me! LOL

    Shaz

    Hi Stewart

What games are you getting with the xbox, some of the games
are very huge and will take time to finish off.. like halo.
plus with online play once it's up and runnig, by the q3\q4 of this
year, halo will last for ages!

One title that I'm looking forward to is : Gun Valkyrie (April\May)

And I'd like a "Street Fighter 2" like fighting game, where once
can do fireballs, do all sorts of gravity defying moves!
Maybe "Mortal Kombat" and or "Kakuto Chojin" might be good.

And a racing game..some very fast like "Wipe Out", there's some
news of a game called : Quantum Redshift.

These games seem very promising. Im paying particular attention to
quality rather than quantity! But quantity also help to beat down
people who don't want xbox to be popular.
I wonder how do these people become like that? ;)

What sites to go to get xbox info?

One game i would add to your list Shaz is Rallisport Challenge.
I am not a great fan of driving games but i would have to say this is the best game i have played on the system apart from Halo.
It really is one of those "just one more go" type of games :)

Yeah that was another game I was considering over "project gotham racing" ..but then i thought there's so many racing type games
coming out of the xbox. a total of 10 so far!
I thought I'd wait a while. I dowloaded all the "Rallisport Challenge"
movies at xbox.ign.com and was very impressed but i think it's
going to be a tuff game. What with cars going off the track and then taking ages to get back into the game.
I'd like something where you can feel the speed and where the
games isnt too hard. I think one of the mags will probably include it as a demo dvd so i'll try it and see how i like it.

Looks like my visa card will be a getting a good battering this
summer! www.play.com are getting richer and richer thanks to
    me!!!

    What games are you getting?

i bought an american system , so the recommendation for rallisport was based on having played most of the games that are out for the system so far.
your choices would be my reccomendations , but i felt i had to add rallisport as it is such a good game.
its control system is spot on , you really do feel as if its your fault when you crash and not the games, never do you feel like its unfair. very unusual these days with some of the sloppy programming that goes into some titles.

anyway get hold of a demo , i think a couple of mins in a shop would be more likely to put you off than entice you into a purchase.

anyway its a good machine that im sure you'll enjoy.

Got my XBox at about 12:30 last night and haven't had much sleep since. Initial opinion is that it rocks. AMPED is superb - much more realistic than SSX. Dead or Alive 3 looks gorgeous. Halo is the Dogs. Little disappointed with Project Gotham but I was starting to fall asleep by then so I'll give it another go tonight. It's a good job JSRF wasn't out as I wouldn't have made it in to work today.

Definitely a better launch than PS2. I can remember being very disappointed on 14/11/2000 with the launch PS2 lineup. Only SSX really excited me. The XBox have a great set of launch games with a few more must-have titles over the next month. I just hope they can keep it going beyond that.

    Let the games begin.

PS2 can NOT do realtime 5.1 DD in games... it can however do it in cut scenes as its using DVD processing to output the 5.1

As for SSX Tricky in DTS yes it is but its DTS 4.1
