PS2 game compatibility I've read the FAQ:¬)

Hi,

having read the FAQ and found a link to show which PS3 is compatible to play PS2 games, I was under the impression that so long as I got a 60 or 80Gb version then it would play PS2 games.

However... people keep telling me that Sony have stopped all new PS3 from being backward compatible to play PS2 games.

Can anybody give a reasonably definitive answer? Only ask because my lad wants one (has saved like mad with birthday money and pocket money), has a PS2 with loads of games, and doesn't want to be stuck with just 2 or 3 games to play.

Apologies if it seems like a stoopid question, especially after taking the time to read through the FAQ section and reading the table in the link up there, but I don't want him to lay out £300 for something that isn't quite what he wants.

Thanks in advance,

Pete

There was an older 80gb varient that was only available in the US that did have backwards compatibility, but that was never available in the UK. Only the 60GB UK PS3 ever had backwards compatibility.

Trust me you will not find a decent bundle anywhere, unless you want a 2nd hand one.
And you cant really import since of different region. Unless you want to pay over £600 for a new one
And if you ask me you might as well buy an 80gb and keep your ps2
and like others pray for sony to update the f/w to allow software emu of ps3 if its possible

yup :¬(

tried about 4 or 5 search facilities and keep coming up with junk on fleabay (wouldn't go near that place with a bargepole), and ghosts at zavvi and simply games(zavvi ghost showing something like £350, but not there when you click the linky, sg showing £430 ish, but didn't click as I've never heard of them).

he may go for an XBox instead, as he can then get a console a and a few games for his money.

Silly Sony, why did they stop backward compatibility? I'm sure there must be many others who have gone to XBox, or similar for better value.

Thanks for the advice,

will see what he wants to do tomorrow after rugby training and he has a chance to price up the various bundles.

You'll fill the 60GB in a few months. To be honest, if you have the cash and you plan to upgrade, make it the first thing you do. It'll save the hassle of a backup/restore and redownload all your PSN games/demos.

It is only software blocking it on 40/80gb. However if you saw the moaning on how many games didnt properly on the EU 60s you'l know why Sony shelved it when there was more important things to work on (like in game XMB). It'll probably be back when the single Japanese programmer gets let of the cupboard at the end of the 'home' development floor.

I'd get an 40 and slap a 320gb in.

how does the ps3 compare with the xbox??

lad is 10 year old with a thing for shoot em up type games at the min(call of duty range are his current faves on ps2, but will always go back to fifa08 regularly).

I guess the Bluray does add something different (added value??)

cheers,

Pete

Sony made an absolutely stupid decision to bin the backwards compatibility IMO. I'm lucky that I got a 60GB one Christmas last year but I hope they can sort it out with some sort of firmware update for those with newer models.

I don't think that's correct... I believe the original PS3s had both the main CPU (emotion engine) and GPU (graphics synthesiser) from the PS2 for complete emulation of PS2 games.
To save costs with later models (like the 60GB UK release models) Sony decided to do away with the PS2 CPU and used partial software emulation instead. The latest models have done away with the PS2 GPU as well. Trouble is, the GPU in the PS2 had 4MB of super-fast (48GB per second) on-chip memory and the PS3s video memory can only shift just over 22GB per second. So, I expect that would make a pure software solution impossible.

Honestly, how many times have you fired up PS2 games on your machine?

I can't remember the last time I played a PS2 game, I bought Okami about 3 or 4 months ago to play as I heard good things, have not even put it into the machine yet.

I got a launch 60 gig so have backwards compatibility but that would definately not be a deal breaker for me, the lad can probably pick up PS3 games cheaper than what he paid for most of his PS2 games lately.
