Hi all. I've had my PS3 since day of release, and i'm very impressed with the quality of games, trailers etc. I dont have any films on Blu Ray yet so i was just wondering is there any difference between the trailers that you download and the actual disks themselves? I downloaded Casino Royale trailer and I dont think it could get any better.

Thanks a lot, Scharf.

It looks amazing, doesn't it? It's only a small trailer though, so the initial impact is WOW!

I watched CR the other night, and TBH the quality is awesome! The colour, the definition, the detail, just cannot be matched by DVD.

The thing is though, you DO get used to viewing HD material. So much so, that after a while watching CR, it only looks "normal".

Go back to viewing SD broadcast after, even BBC HD, and the difference is instantly recognisable...

trailers 720p, blu-ray 1080p.... no contest

I think the way that it gets better is that you get suround sound output when viewing the Blu-ray while as when you're watching in XMB tis only crappy stereo :(

Watching the Store trailers on a 6ft projection screen, the quality isn't the absolute apex, quite honestly. Still pretty good, but can't touch Blu-Ray. I suppose they need to keep the files at a downloadable size.

Most of the trailers havent been optimised for HD. Even the Casino Royale trailer isnt as good as Blu Ray. Its not even the correct aspect ratio.

well :censored: me! it is 1080p, im sure i downloaded a 720p version on release night, unfortunately i deleted it as i got it on blu-ray anyway. i have noticed all the others are 720p.... shameless self promotion sony? :hiya:

The downloaded trailer is a good quality but I agree that hd-dvd has a slight edge over BluRay at the moment. The 1080p vs 720p discussion is virtually eliminated when you sit at a reasonable distance from the screen. I viewed a lot of displays (40") side by side before I purchased my last TV and at my normal viewing distance (10ft) there was no way I could tell the 1080p source on a 1080p screen from the 720p source on a 768 screen. It only became apparant when you got to about 4 ft. For a 46" display I do agree that the 1080p might be more noticeable at the same viewing distance.

not one to call you a liar and im certainly not, but your eyesight may not be the same as everyone elses.

i sit 13ft from my 42"tv now and can still easily see the massive difference between sd and hd where other people say thats impossible.

as soon as i can go 1080p plasma or projector i will do, i believe il benefit from it and thats all that matters to me

blue ray xmen 3 very grainy ....v disappointed no better than dvd

Are you sure? The DVD version of X-Men 3 I got in the box set was absolutely shocking. Even the other half noticed it, and she doesn't ordinarily give a monkey's. Must be better than that, surely?

Agreed, my screen is 125" and the Blu-ray quality is very noticably better than the downloaded trailer. Colours in particular were brighter, with BD. I sit 11ft away.

I also think that the difference between SD and 720P is significant, even at 15ft when standing at the back of my lounge. Obviously SD is very poorly handled by most LCD and Plasma displays. It's only a viable argument if you would compare a CRT with DVD source to an LCD or plasma with a 720p source.

If you read my post properly you will have realised that I viewed 2 hd sources (one 720p and one 1080p) sided by side and I couldn't tell the difference at 10ft. If you google a bit it is a widely accepted fact that the optimum viewing distance for a 40" 1080p display is 5ft and 8ft for a 720p. Once you go above the 5ft the your vision looses the ability to focus on the detail of the pixels and interpolates between them, thus loosing the benefit. I also have an Infocus 4805 DLP 480p projector which displays a better and crisper image on 80" than my LCD with a hd source over 40". A lot of it depends of the quality of your processing chip rather than how many pixels your display has. If you sit close to your display for gaming then you would benefit from a 1080p display.

Go to your retailer and ask him to set it up for you if you don't believe me.

What?
In that thread I was comparing the picture quality of the 360 via Component and the the PS3 via HDMI, not comparing the 360's HD DVD add on against the PS3's built in Blue Ray.
I find the menus/dashboard & games on the PS3 have a sharper picture on the PS3, however, when using the HD DVD add on (an entirely seperate piece of kit to the 360) I find the PQ of HD DVD's better than the PS3's Blue Ray player or Videos downloaded from the PS3 Store (so far).

Some people have got way too much spare time on their hands...
