I think before succumbing to that one, you'd need to find out exactly where that came from.

I've had Cd's played via my kids PS1 and PS2 at home and no way did it come anywhere close to a good CD player on it's own.

If you have the review to hand,I'd be very keen to know where it came from.

Hi meekon, firstly: please please please use normal sentence construction. Title capitalisation makes it really difficult to read.

Secondly, do you really mean PS3 rather than PS1, as I've some good things about that as a CD player?

Cheers, Nick

The first point I wholeheartedly agree with.

The second...again I'd be interested to see/hear the area that info came from.

No, what you've heard is only half the story-

The "transport" is meant to be pretty good, eg, if you have the technical know-how to remove the transport and build a new cd player around it then, if you think its worth the hassle, you might end up with something pretty good.

I saw a site once where someone did exactly that, it still needed a separate DAC though and didn't look that great visually.

IMO I think you could use any console as a CD Player. However your going to need a TV to see what you are doing as stated in the link there is no play button. Also TV Speakers can't really add bass you will have to get a set of speakers.

So yes it would be good but for the money you spend on the console and speakers etc, you could have bought a Hi-Fi.

This story is grounded in truth, but it relates to the first generation PS1. The first production run of the big old grey box PS1, that had RCA audio out connections on the rear, and even then I seem to recall it is a specific model number. However, the laser is highly prone to failure on these early models - so even if you can track one of the first generation down (I expect it only came out in the US and Japan?), its unlikely to be in good working order.

Right...I see now....if you're prepared to find one with a laser that's still in good nick, attend to the ancillary electronics etc etc, then you can build a decent player out of the remains.

I dug around and found this...

http://dogbreath.de/PS1/index.html

Perhaps that's a bit cruel, but the mods include...

1.Replacing the PSU in a separate case,or replacing it entirely.
2.Extensively damping the transport externally.
3.Removing/modifying the audio output stage.
4.Removing modchips if fitted.

It's very interesting from a DIY point of view, but I think I'll stick with what I've got,and I think it's fair to say you would need a modest amount of expertise with a soldering iron.

I found one on the diyaudio.com that had been rebuilt with new psu and other parts and internally damped, but the best thing was the guy had spray painted it satin black, it looked so cool ! like a hi-end CDP

These rumors seem to be doing the rounds again and a friend of mine got a SCH-1001 issue PS1 for $10 to try. My PS1 is a SCH-1002 which is also one of the models that should be good so I gave it a run against my normal HiFi. In a word the PS1 (via the RCA out) was poor, very crisp treble but very lacking in bass, lacking midrange and a very flat soundstage. I can see that against a cheap DVD player the over powering treble might give a sense of it being "HiFi" but against a good CD player it's a very poor player.

That MSNBC article is shocking.
Audiophiles have been abuzz about PlayStation 1 audio for some time now

When I was putting together my first separates system, my PS1 performed CD duties for a while, as I only had funds for an amp and speakers initially. It did me proud for a bit, and it was quite a novelty for me that I could use one piece of kit for DVD, CD and games. Guess it was the closest thing to a convergance product at that time :D

When I got round to buying a CD player (Rotel 951, still using it now) it comfortably whupped the PS1, even though (from what I'm reading here) the PS I had was one of the "desirable" ones.
