The only real cons are that when you come to update the firmware you will have to wait until there is an unlocker made for it.

i take it ,its not best to update the firmware then!!

is that the only difference ??? can it be used as apple intended even with an Orange sim??

** on a side note** anyone using an Orange contract sim had any problems using an unlocked iphone ???

You wont be able to use or see for that matter the visual voicemail as you can with the o2 version.
Im not using a orange sim but a t-mobile one and as yet no probs.

You don't get the free wifi (BT Openzone + The Cloud) and visual voicemail and the cheaper phone (assuming contract vs PnG) are the main service differences .... the unlock prevents you from upgrading to new firmware until its been exploited (bad if you don't think and do an upgrade when it hits and then you can't downgrade the baseband)

the main reason why i sold my 2g 8gb iphone i was using on vodafone,
as my contract was up. i sold the 2g and the money i got for it.
i bought the 16gb 3g iphone on the 35pm tariff,

now i got the wifi where ever i go...

The unlimited WiFi and unlimited data with no FUP is one of the best bits about the iPhone experience. Everything is so seamless... I walk into a service station, McDonalds, airport, hotel etc etc and I'm immediately and automatically connected to the WiFi hotspot.

I step outside and I'm back on mobile data, but still without a worry of big data bills or exceeding my FUP and getting a big bill.

I also like the fact that whenever there is a firmware update there is nothing stopping me from going ahead and applying it.

Having had an unlocked and jailbroken 2G iPhone and now having an O2 3G iPhone, there is no comparison, legit all the way :)
