Prolly a dumb question, but does the style of cabinet make any difference (a part from to your wallet)? eg. is there any difference between the MJ Acoustics Reference 100 in black and in wood veneer?

Its not that dumb. Theres probably no difference betwen the finishes on the subs you mention, but finishes can affect the sound. Heavy polyurethane finishes are good for damping vibration and resonance. The effect can be heard to greatest effect on guitar bodies. Thin laquers and cellulose coatings allow the guitar to really sing, whilst the really thick lusterous poly finishes deaden them, but look nice and are hard wearing.

When they say "Black Ash" that usually means the speaker/sub is veneered to match the other (more obvious veneers) models in the range. Despite it often being difficult to see any wood grain except in a very good light. (there's a pun in there somewhere) :D

Certainly some of the Rel models are finished in the same way inside (although probably not veneered). What Hifi think it sounds better/different but I havn't heard them myself.
