Projector recommendations for go with my DV79

Apologies in advance if this thread is a little :offtopic:

I have a DV79 which I am now looking to match with a new projector. I want to get the best possible picture for my money, and I was hoping that Forum members (and possibly Arcam themselves) might be able to point me in the right direction.

I want to go for a DLP projector with a maximum budget of £3.5k. I have posted similar threads elsewhere, but it has just occured to me that people in Arcam forum may have more relevant experience.

PJ's I am looking for at the moment include:

Marantz 12S3
Second hand.

Optoma Themscene H77
Very quiet, accepts HDMI via DVI, little or no light leakage onto the ceiling.

Infocus 7205
Very bright, therefore can deal with low level light, accepts HDMI via their weird connection.

Anyone have any experience with the above and a DV79????

Thanks,

Richard

I'm not sure about price 'over there'. In our show room here in the 'states, we have a DV79 hooked up to a Runco CL-510 with HDMI/DVI - it looks great.

My experience has been the Infocus products don't have the picture quality of most other brands. The Marantz is probably the best option from your list.

The DV-79 deserves a very good projector!!

Hi Purified,

Thanks for this - the Runco looks a little rich for my blood. But thanks for your feedback!

p.s. Do you use a scaler with your setup? I will upgrade to a scaler later, but need to the best pic possible in the meantime....

I don't use a scaler - just direct DV79-510 via HDMI/DVI

On a related note:
want to see a GREAT picture? Try a DV29 direct into a 42" Runco ED plasma - WOW!!!

If you are looking to use the PJ mainly with your DVD player then you should seriously consider going to a very good SD (standard definition) projector rather than HD.

In my experience, showing DVDs at native resolution almost always looks better than when they are scaled. Scalers interpolate to fill in the missing resolution, which often results in some loss of crispness (don't get me wrong some high-end scalers are awesome but you get what you pay for). SD projectors, like the Optoma H57, are awesome and cost half of what you were looking to spend. Why spend all your dosh on something that you cannot take full advantage of?

Check out the H57 and H77 side by side and see for yourself whether HD is really worth twice the price for your needs. I think you might be surprised.

Hi J,

Good advice - thanks for this. What is not abundantly clear is the fact that I will use the PJ almost as much for Sky and XBOX. The former will turn HD at some point next year, and the latter will be great once I have modded it.

Hence HD. Also I will probably get a scaler towards the end of the year.....

That makes sense though I wouldn't bank on a very large range of HD offerings on Sky until late 2006 despite what they say -- roll out will be slow (and likely pricey). As for your list, I think the H77 would represent the best value. My 2p.
