projector position dilemma?

Okay need some help please!
Looking to buy my first projector im on a tight budget and have decided on the epson tw-10.
My problem is the positioning of the projector so before I buy one I would like to check what the experts think.
Okay ceiling mounted is out of the question and unfortunatly so is a shelf but I still really want to get a projector so I have two options left I have a wall unit that it can sit on but this means that the projector will sit about 3ft wide of where the centre of the screen will be is this out of the question?
The other option is for it to sit on a table in front of the sofa which isint ideal but what can you do? Any advice please?

Although I do not own an Epson PJ I am pretty sure that most PJs cannot handle horizontal shift like you're proposing. Mine (Infocus X1) clearly stated it has to be pointed at 90 degrees horizontally. It can point up or down 20 deg because it can compensate via "keystoning".

You can consider putting it under a (probably needs a little bit DIY) coffee table, as long as you ensure good ventilation.

I think 3ft to the side would be even too much for the units with optical lens shift, I wanted to place my Hitachi approx 4ft to the side in a similar position but the lens shift wouldn't do it. (The TX will allow horiz offsetting up to a quarter of the width of the screen eg 6ft wide screen = 18 inches offset). Anyway, it's not recommended to use the PJ at the limits of its lens shift capabilities, the picture suffers.

Unsure how many units employ horizontal keystone capabilities, but again digital keystoning is something to be avoided if at all possible.

Sounds like a temporary table installation is the way to go, many people do this with no problems, just takes a few mins more to set up...PJ

Many thanks for your replies very helpfull.
I thought of another idea Im not sure if its possible or not but I wondered if I could make or buy some kind of replaceable shelf that could be hidded by a picture when not in use. Since my wife has been pestering me for some kind of canvas art I wondered if this would cover the brackets when the shelf is not up.
I can see her point that it wouldnt look very nice permanently on view on a shelf and being as she doesnt mind me buying one Im willing to work round this somehow

This may be the answer to your dilemma...

Another Option would be to use a complex arangment of mirrors, it might be worth a go.
But in the end some sort of mounting mecanism where you can keep the projector at 90 degs TO the screen is the best option.

I would just buy the Sony HS50. That is a work of art in itself.

Cap :)

...but not as lovely as the TX... ;)

Hi Mr Fuse if you decide to go the "hidden shelf bracket' route and you treat your wife
(as you know you should) to a nice canvas let me know. I design and paint these and if you let me now what size and style you want i can give you a quote.
Oh special deals to forum members of course!!!

I use one of these. The PJ (AE100) sits on the top shelf. The PJ now sits opposite the screen.

Would you have room for one of these?

Before that unit, I used a trolley and tilted it up using keystone (not recommended). The one good thing is the PJ and the DVD players was together.

It was one of these.

I dont really because the sofa is right against the back wall so if the projector is going to sit directly opposite the screen it will have to be in front of the sofa on a trolley or table as your second suggestion or on a drop down shelf on the wall thanks for your input
