What I would like to see is a projector shootout event where all the commonly listed projectors in this forum have a screenshot rally at somebodys house.

The idea is for people to get together with their projectors and all travel to somebodys house with a flexible setup so that we can do

Frame of a film screenshot per projector
All in the same enviroment using the same equipment and camera.

Personally I would like to see how far the quality has come from my little AE100 compared to the newer AE300, 500 Z2, HS20 etc... projectors. As some people obviously see huge steps in improvement where others see minor steps.

The event could also have user reviews on what they liked, didnt like about each projector.

If somebody could host/coordinate this then I think the avforums members would gain a heap of info.

We could even go for a curry after the event :)

Does anybody think this is a good idea?

Anybody with a big enough HC room to host such an event and able to coordinate the shootout within the time limit?

its a nice idea, but difficult. It would take ages because you would have so set up and calibrate each machine sequentially in order to be fair

I think this is a great idea - I would also suggest combining DVD player comparisions to establish how good a high end player is against mid range and DVI / HDMI v component etc

lol @ "a couple of plasmas".

Great idea though, I'd love to see all these projectors in one place.

Our friends across the pond often go in for this kind of thing. Mind you, they do seem to have bigger houses. In fact now I come to think of it, they seem to have bigger cars, bigger wallets, bigger..........yeh well you know :D ;) It will be interesting to see if we have it in us here to do the same?

Well getting 2-3 plasmas shouldn't be a problem. 5-6 PJ's maybe 2 screens. 4-5 DVD players. possibly a set of speakers and 2 amps. I know of one members house where a small group 6-8 could gather.
But a chruch hall, School hall Uni lecture theatre or hotel conference room.

The good thing about a conference room in a hotel is that

    A) Somewhere to sleep if you travel far (hotel bed)
    B) Big enough to run more than one pj + screen
    C) Hotel Bar + Food
    D) has chairs and tables available for those that bring additional kit (PC's for example)

Apart from calibration (shouldnt it be assumed this is already done by the owner to the best of their ability to save messing about)

I used to goto lan parties in conf rooms and it was a blast checking out all the others kit and getting some good tips etc..

You cant assume each owner is going to get the same out of their respective machines..... if you want a proper comparison, the group would really need to get hold of a pro to calibrate each device as you went. For instance, I guarantee that a device i calibrate is going to look different to someone using just DVE or something.....

Did none of you get to the event? This was pretty much what was done

The event was far more formal from what i gather and included lectures etc.
I think this is a more memebrs X, Y and Z are getting together on this date here for a demo of these, pop along.
    Type thing.
I wonder if the forum is big enough to entice reveiw kit from manufacturers distributors, for a free evaluation. I think between us we could beta test any unit to its max and also comment on flaws features etc better than mags, i know reveiws are done to sell products but a glowing reveiw here seems to go a log way!
I wonder what the UK market for sub £2k LCD projectors is??? for example or sub £500 speaker packages???

Sounds like a laugh but Buns is right. These things need set up for the environment they are in. Using multiple screens with many PJ's on at same time is not going to give a definative answer to any questions. It will be fun though and just for that reason you should consider having a go.....but remember that beer is a necessity at these events...

    I HAVE THE IDEAL PLACE

My office has an unused 800 sq foot room that would be ideal - especially late afternoon. It's got a few windows that need blacking out but shouldn't be too much hassle. Also got plenty of chairs - about 30 in all.

It's in east lancs which may be the only downside.

But you're all welcome. I could ask local dealers and forum sponsors, discountTV, who are just up the road, if they could help out with some kit for the sound.

The place would seat 60 - 100 easy. Like I say, it's a big room.

    Guys,

I am at work at the moment, but on Monday I shall start making some calls. How big a room/rooms do you think we would need. I have been thinking of local community centres and such as they would be quite cheap.

I would be happy to bring my HS10 and HTPC, and maybe even my amps and speakers if it is held somewhere local to me.

    Cheers

    Rob

P.S I want this to just be a fun get together of forum members, as opposed to an Event 3 (But if Gordon wants to come and calibrate my project, I won't complain :) )

    Hi Guys

I think the following would be a minimum requirement.

    1 X Pullup projector screen, 16:9?
1 X DVD player with Component out (+ leads)
1 X Digital camera and tripod (+spare batteries)
1 X Table aligned to screen
1 X Power supply (Extension lead)

That could be used as the shootout setup. To get your pj into the shootout we can just scribble names on paper, what the pj is etc.. to avoid confusion.

I would suggest that the person taking the photo's doesnt touch other peoples projectors but sets up the DVD film to the same frames for the photos.

This shouldnt take more than 15-25 mins per projector. Once all shots have been taken then the nights your oyster to do what else you want like side by side projector comparissons etc..

Additional to that is anything else people want to bring. Maybe a second setup if you have a spare screen or find a room with white/grey matte walls :)

Show off your kit and knowledge, maybe show your skill in Avia for a few minutes or other techniques you know, 1x1 pixel mapping?

And yeah, it shoud be a lighthearted get together with at least one semi controlled shootout so that we can have a nice new thread in the forum detailing what we liked/didnt like about certain projectors.

I would vote a hotel conf room myself due to its obvious benefits (beer and room to kip in)

It would be good to maintain a list of who wants to go, what equipment they can bring (if any) etc..

Who owns a good digital camera and knows how to take decent shots of a lit screen?

if its close-ish (live in walsall) i would like to come , and would be happy to bring my PJ and DVD player.
also it would be intresting to try a few differant leads too , just to see if there is much of a gap between say a £20 component cable and a £80 component cable.

    excellent idea

While I attended the 'event ' and enjoyed it, I think most people are trying to do a home theatre setup as cheap as possible, I know I am

So getting together a number of projectors in this price bracket is ideal. How many shops can you go to and see a good range of projectors and demo them for a lenghy period.

I think a mission statement should be made at the begining of what we're trying to acheieve here, having too many variables ie. power cables, interconnects , screens thrown into the mix will just lose sight of the projectors themselves.

I'm more than happy to attend and take digital pictures, I'd love to lend a PJ but don't have one. If this is a real affair then I'm sure some local business in that area would get involved with the intention of getting some sales out of it. And if like me you're on the verge of buying one it would be a great sweatener to a local business that sells them to know that there are 30-50 people after PJ's and would be bound to lend some for the evening
