hi all

I was just wondering if it’s possible or not to have a projector and screen, like below in my conservatory , it’s east facing and I could get some blinds (previous owner has removed)

I’d love to have my sky mini box connectored to this instead of a tv , as it’s hard to mount in there cos it’s all windows and window sill is a big dangerous

Any other ideas welcome ...

I don’t want to spent a fortune btw!!!

With you mentioning East facing I assume that you intend to watch during the day. If the doors face east the the sun will be from behind where the projector is placed in the pic, pointing at the screen. Hmmm.

If the blinds are anything like the ones in my conservatory then they allow light through even when closed. Plus you have the roof letting in lumens by the hundred. Doesn't sound positive does it ?
If you do try it then don't get a white screen, black or grey will be much better.

Personally I'd find a second-hand tv with a bright picture placed on a table or something, with blinds to shield it from the sun. But that's just what I'd do. :)

I admire the idea! All depends on your expectations. With a React screen and proper blackout blinds you could get a pleasing enough image but its sounds like you dont want to spend that much. Going the cheap route with what you've listed is worth a shot to see if you like the projector experience. You might pick up the bug from there and then invest in a better screen.

Have you taken into consideration audio ?

Not sure what your expectations would be, the projector whilst it put up the 78 image the quality of the image may not be up to much, couple that with amount of light that would likely be coming in to the conservatory, that would contribute to only washing out the image more so. whilst its all do able, i would have low expectations of what your going to get image wise that way you won't disappointed and as Leo31291 then there's the audio to take in account.

Tv was my first thought but window sill is so small and It’s risky

Plus big tv even second hand costs lol

I thought the projector would be quirky

Good thing with Amazon is free returns right

So i guess I can only try

I searched “day” on the above projector reviewss and it was ok

The pull down screen I just picked any tbh, if a particular type is better pls do share links

I haven’t thought about audio no, the projector has audio it said

Will be hard to hang a sound bar or something lol

Especially as I’m actually looking to hang the projector on the white metal bar as not sure which other way....

That projector you linked to is utter rubbish by the way. Whatever you do, don’t even think of going down that path. For the same money you can get a second hand projector that isn’t a mobile phone screen with a light shining through it...

I think you should think seriously why you want to make a hard job even harder. Light control and dealing with not only external light but reflections make or break a home cinema set up.

Sorry but anyone looking for good performance from a home cinema then time to stand back and rethink.

Hi sorry to clarify was this aimed at the link I sent or another?

The reviews on Amazon are usually reliable, no?

As per thread title perhaps I am dreaming then :(

It was just an idea I can’t afford a cinema room lol

Maybe I will just need to buy a tv and put it on. The window sill...

I do think a TV will be a safer option, and probably cheaper too !

Looney, I note you added a 'wow' to my post. I wasn't kidding. Inside those cheap projectors is just a rubbish LCD monitor out of a phone / tablet, and they remove the backlight assembly and then shine a light through it and put a big single element plastic lens in front. Contrast ratio / colour accuracy / motion are all utterly terrible.

It's nothing like a real projector. You are 100 x better off buying a genuine old used home cinema projector than a brand new one of those.

But, still, forget about trying to use a projector in a conservatory unless you're only willing to use it when it's dark outside!

Do you have a link to an eBay it m perhaps of an old projector just so I get an idea?

I appreciate your comments it’s just weird to see so many good reviews

Tbf it will Ben mostly night time use
It just seems more fun than a tv lol

Hi
Have enjoyed many movies in my conservatory (cinema) room but almost all of my viewing is during the evening excluding as much light as possible. The room is predominantly whiteish with cream blinds and white plastic, not ideal but still provides an immersive enjoyable experience.
An addition of a solid roof and using the window blinds (non blackout) can reduce daytime light levels on a dull day to the extent that it is still a watchable picture if somewhat washed out.
If you want to watch daytime TV then I would not recommend it but evening viewing allowing for sunset times is very worthwhile.

My pj is a Sony VPL HW40 EW with an 88" 16:9 Sapphire white screen

With that budget you would be better off with something like this - SANYO PLV-Z4 Home Cinema Projector | eBay

or this

Optoma Theme Scene HD70 DLP Projector | eBay

Also check out the classifieds on this site, there are often bargains to be had on older gear.

Having said all of that, don't bother with any projector in that room unless you are prepared to only watch it after dark......

THanks for all the advice all

Interested to know the Sanyo link you sent

What is it about that projectors that makes It good

What spec should I look out for

Trying to understand what makes the Amazon one no good despite reviews

It would really need to see the amazon one in action first to understand just how poor it will be, then perhaps go to your local richersounds and see one of the better machines in action, then you will understand.

Those reviews are by people who don't have even the first clue about how a video projector should perform.

You're in the fortunate position that you've asked here first, on a forum populated by enthusiasts.

Those projectors do not share anything at all in common with a proper video projector. As I said previously, all they contain is a lamp, the screen out of a phone or tablet, and a single big lens. They are appalling in every possible way.

It's difficult to get across just how rubbish they are unless you see one first hand next to a real PJ.

Any second hand genuine home cinema projector will be a better choice than one of those. With a £200 budget, you should have decent options available to you.

With a grey screen and a second hand 1080p Optoma you would get a relatively decent image for a newcomer. But I'm struggling to envisage how you're going to set your sources and put speakers into that room.
