Hi all,

a mate of mine is way to lazy to do any research or even come on here and post about a projector he's looking to buy.

Money is no object to him. He's looking at the Sim2 CX3 (or has been advised by someone). I know there is a new JVC HD750 on the market too.

I was wondering which one is the better or in fact which are the best four of five HD projectors on the market. He has money to burn and has just bought a new house where he is going to create a dedicated cinema room.

The screen he's looking at is:

SCREEN RESEARCH HOME THEATER SYSTEMS

Could you also advise if that is one of the best screens on the market? The guy is adamant to buy the best!

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My set up is below so it is way, way off what he's looking for. I wish I could afford these top end products!

Thanks

Gagz

I think if somebody has too much money to burn he should go to a custom installer, provide the company with a budget and enjoy watching movies.
This might be the better option to get 'the best' than just shopping expensive components.
You need a perfect chain, calibration, etc, etc.

Cheers mate - appreciate the info.

Indeed: Indeed you need to think of the whole rather than the parts in any projection system. The sources, viewing distances and angles, decor of room, all play a part in coming to conclusions as to what devices you want to use to get the best image.

If money really is no object then he should be in for a treat.....

Same sentiment here. All too often (and usually with footballers) I am still fighting nonsense like "don't plasmas need regassing" because their mate read it somewhere once and they're more likely to believe their mate than a stranger who's asking for a six-figure budget to build their dream AV system!!! Best thing he can do is take some time to select an installer he would like to work with, and then get a proper consultation and look at the whole system and it's environment and make a solution.

And the answer would be a Sim2 HT5000e with an anamorphic lens onto a Stewart Cinecurve fed by a Lumagen Radiance by the way :D

Money no object - I can only dream, but if it were true I would to check out JVC's DLA-SH4K, if only to be disappointed

Resolution isn't everything.... Nor is 3500 lumens from an 800w lamp!!!! Not quite Home Cinema so much as very large public display I reckon. Would love to see it fed native material but would probably be more at home in military and commercial applications.

:D I think the best advice appeared in post 2, 4 and 5 and Gagzi's mate should really go and see a professional - but after glass or two of wine (hic) thought this off the wall suggestion might stimulate some chat

Military?

BTW, I totally agree with the way this thread is going. If money really is no object, then I'd hand the keys to the house to the professionals and disappear for a couple of weeks to somewhere warm.

The OP's friend might want to try this:

Military get all the cool stuff first. You know those big cool bunkers you see on the movies (like Wargames LOL - classic) those screens are all mega resolution numbers. Same for government for example traffic and rail control systems tend to have a central display wall of a handful of incredibly high-res displays edge-to-edge showing the status of the entire network in one hit.

Lake processor is something I would really love to play with!

I had images of those huge screens they have at rock festivals, only on the side of a battlefield.

The high end production is great. But at £150,000 I suspect the OP might be saying "Well...maybe it is a bit of an object". :D

I would go for the top-end Runco for the big boys (we are talking about burning money here ;))

Seriously would love to have suitable Stewart - life-time investment

I dunno that Sim2 really is something you know. I reckon it would put up a fight with the VX22 which is about 10 grand more. If it's good enough for Francis Ford Coppolla..... I will admit though I've always has a soft-spot for Sim2 projectors

Stewart Cinecurve is what dreams are made of and damn right a life time investment (although we were saying that with 16:9 screens before anamorphic became the big thing LOL!). Shame it's so much more expensive here by comparison to the states. Here we're talking another 50% almost on top of Da-Lite, SMX and Screen Research prices, Stateside the difference is much closer.

For the 1080p version of the Sim2 C3X I think they got David Lynch in on the launch.

Saw the 4K2K running native (NHK shot) footage at IFA in a private demo - you want to see the computers and racking that goes with getting any playback material in native to work! It did look very good with native material, I think Meridian are working on a scaler to go with it for legacy formats which will cost a cool £80k on top of the projector price.
The recent high end demo I was at with Genesis Technologies had the Digital Projection 3 chip on to a DNP EPIC curved screen with full masking control with Isco III, now that was stunning for around £100k not including audio.

Firstly you are right I do not know (playing 'only' in the 3500 Euro projector league), secondly this was no serious argument it is more like one of these jokes about two Russian billionaires:
First: 'What is the price of this tie?'
Second: 'Very cheap, only 800 Euro'
First: 'Sorry to hear. I knew a shop you can get it for 1200 Euro'

Bottom line: Costs more equals being better.

If the OP's mate just wants to spend then DPI is worth a look. Some of their products are based on PD products but cost more.

Ouch! That hurts...

I would suggest that the Digital Projection 3 chip models are more than a match for anything else out there based on pure quality alone.

For your reference, DPI is the American arm of the UK projector manufacturer Digital Projection. In the US they sell OEM'd versions of the PD single chip products but these are not available to residential customers in Europe.
