Projection Horror Story

Well, last night i watched a movie on my 7205, then decided to play some Counterstrike:Source on my projector, 86in screen is mad fun.....so i switched input source etc, happily playing along....when suddenly i heard a crack sound, then along with a small swooshing noise the image on the screen suddenly slid down and away, i heard a glass shattering noise......i sat there in my chair for a few moments.....that feeling of cold, immaculate dread in my guts.......

my projector (as a temporary measure) is located on a 60cm black covered piece of MDF that juts 30cm out from a shelf in an MFI deep bookcase so as to bring it forward enough to make the image size small enough for my screen, with 2 pieces of nylon string tied around nails at the end of the MDF going up to the top of the bookcase and being tied around nails to help support its weight....and a 2.5k ankle weight at the back of the MDF shelf to again help balance the weight........

my thoughts were (aside from OMG THATS £3,000 GONE) that the nylon string must somehow have snapped (even tho thats pretty much impossible without half a ton of weight on it).......i stand up, and turn round expecting to see my projector lying on the floor, lens and bulb shattered, casing split open....

the first thing i see is the MFI bookcase shelf only partly angled down, one of the little plastic shelf supports obviously broke.........

then i see my beloved brand new (refurbished) projector......HANGING by its screwed in VGA cable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

still fearing possible worst scenarios, i also find on the floor a glass whisky tumble in pieces......the glass breaking noise i heard must have come from this......so i gently pick up my projector (the vga cable is basically worked around the nylon string, so the nylon saved the day).......put it on the lower shelf and set it deep back on the shelf.......switch it on.....IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

phew.......at least so far...it was 2am so i only tested it briefly...lol
but it turned on, it gave an image from the VGA cable too....i guess because it didnt actually hit anything it wouldnt have sustained any more damage than it would from bouncing around in a box on the way from factory to shops in a lorry.....
however i'll know for sure when i get home and test it properly...on something a lot more sturdy....lol

i guess i was dumb for thinking my quick rigged solution would be capable of working, although it wasnt meant to stay like that long term, i am just having to wait for something before i can do a proper install.......oh well, you live and learn, and as far as i can tell, luckily, this time i lived and didnt get burnt (fingers crossed).......

but to all those out there with PJ's....make sure its always on a VERY secure platform...lol

You were luuckkyy :)

I occasionally live in fear of something like this happening. Luckily I am insured for this type of accident.

Hope it's all okay :) ,

I'm betting you were wearing your brown trousers for a while there :)

Heh, when I got my ceiling mount I basically arranged the chairs and settee under the projector for a couple of days. Something that size (HS50) and expense hanging from your ceiling by a flimsy looking metal tube is somewhat of a distraction for a while.... Even so, get a ceiling mount and help yourself avoid a trip to the hospital cardiac ward in the near future.

Although I did have a similar stomach churning experience when my 104" screen fell of the wall. And missed my £2500 TV by about 2 inches.

Insurance is a good thing, but even so....

Cheers

Lucky it was a screw in VGA as well, had it been hdmi or component it could have fell as well.

very lucky VGA is screw in...lol

the HDMI might have helped to slow things as well, but that was definitely pulled out when i got to it....

sadly i cant get a ceiling mount, the way the ceilings work here means i got no beam to screw it in to.....

prolly gonna get an actual stand for it at some point......atm i've put a shelf from a set of shelves on top of a pile of books on my rear speakers....heh..dont worry, this ones secured (by very very very thick silver gaffa tape and nylon string...lol).

been using it tonight, not for a DVD as such, altho i did a brief check on one for total quality, but have watched a voyager episode, simpsons, WWE RAW (i know, i know...call it nostalgia..lol...nowhere near as good as the Ultimate Warrior and Hitman Hart days tho..heh)and played some games, now typing on it....so all is well as far as i can tell.....couldnt see any damage anywhere either.....so looks like i was very lucky...heh

Are your ceiling plasterboard then, or is it an old house with lattice and plaster?

not exactly sure which it is, all i know is there is no beam where i would need the PJ to go :-(

however, where i have it atm might be fine anyway, i'll put it on a proper stand obviously but it gives the right image size, its slightly closer to my head than i'd appreciate, but i often have my puter running when im in my room so im used to a bit of fan noise...lol

You should be able to fit one (or two) extra noggins in between the joists at the appropriate point(s) - fix them to the joists with angle brackets. Assuming you can lift the floor above to get access.

sadly im in a bedroom, in an oldish house with very difficult to access sections in the loft type roof...lol....its also my parents house (back there for a while after splitting up with someone) and they dont like the idea of stuff being hung from the ceiling that weighs more than a light fitting....(or the screw holes that would go thru).....they are somewhat reluctant to change things like that, took them years to realise it would be better to have d/g installed than keep repairing window frames...lol
