I'm still deciding on a DVD recorder and my choice has been narrowed down to a Sony HX900 or a Pioneer 720H. I'm more interested in the Pioneer, but this model doesn't have progressive output, the Sony does.

Now, I know on a normal tv this isn't such a big deal, but in a few weeks I'll have a Philips 9966 107cm plasma tv (pixel plus 2, 1024x1024) and I obviously want the best quality for my DVD movies.

    Any advice on this?

Well as fairly new to all this AV stuff, but after purchasing a Tosh 36ZP48 and RD-XS32, the picture quality is amazing using progressive scan. So I would say get a TV and DVD that can display this mode.

Invested in a £77 1m QED SR-CV1 component cable, I guess that helps with display quality as well.

I have the Sony HX1000 and it's progressive output into my plasma is fantastic (you can switch it on and off using the remote to see the difference) - whats more you can use it to give a prog scan output for anything connected through it so I now get Sky with an improved picture as well. This to me is just as valuable as all the recording/hard drive bits.

thanks for the information! I ordered a Sony RDR-HX900 today and got a VERY good price from a local Sony Center (I'll pay 700€ tax included). Should be here next wednesday (takes a while because the HX900 is out of stock now)
