Progressing nicely

Please forgive my stupidity but I have been seeing people talking about progressive scanning. What is this for?

It's way of de-interlacing PAL and NTSC pictures to give a smoother and sharper picture. Only really of use to plasma or projectors since the effect is more apparent on larger screens.
