    Hi,
I'm just in the middle of choosing what DVD player I will be
upgrading from my Sony 725.....I'm hoping to get the Philips 963
or if not then the Tosh 520e.....
My question is has anybody been using the Philips or indeed any
Prog scan player with the Panny and that it will display pal progressive.... Theres a good £100 in the difference between the
    tosh and philips.
    Any help would be great......

It definitely does accept PAL P/S. I'm using mine with an Arcam DV88+.

Thanks for the reply....I really like the look of the Philips and
want the Pal progressive.....now if only somebody had them
in stock. Does it make a big difference, the Sony is a very good
player, I use component already but you know yourself the better
the picture you can send to it the better the projector will be.

    Cheers.....

The Toshiba's will not output progressive pal, the Philips 963 will.
Richard Plumb is using the 963 with the AE100.
Progressive scan makes normal interlaced componant look out of focus.
There's also the Limit 9900 here for £200, it has been quoted as having the same Zoran Vaddis V progressive chipset as the 963sa.

Harman Kardon DVD25 suitable upgraded outputs PAL prog scan to a panny, it does it very well too. Make sure it is upgraded with relevent firmware.

Just to correct Tim's post, the 963 has a Faroudja 2300 chipset, the Arcam has the Zoran Vaddis V (as does the limit apparantly).

The faroudja is widely recognised as the better chipset, but both are very good.

Richard have you had any problems with the progressive pal/ntsc
from the 963 on your AE100.....did you try out the 5.1 phono outs
on the player, I read on some post that the decoders on the player are better than some amps.

haven't tried the phono outs. I have a sony DB830, which has good sound, but the philips could be better. analog outs would also let me use SACD, which I am a bit curious about. I'll try it in a month or so, when I get the urge to tweak again (after watching lots of movies)

Yeah would be interesting to hear if its any better....I'm using a Sony DB925 amp and have never tried the decoder on the DVD
can you tell me what does your AE100 report as the signal type
for pal prog....its 480p for ntsc and 625i for interlaced pal
does it say 525p or 576p

NTSC reports as 525P, PAL as 625P (I think)
