Found the JVC DRM1 for around £300, but can anyone suggest any alternatives?

Would I use component outputs to connect to a Toshiba PF2 and use picture mode "Progress" to get progressive scan playback?
I assume it's only pre-recorded DVDs which give progressive scan, or am I wrong?

Edit: Ah, I now see this has been done to death. And the JVC has no RGB input which is a bit stupid.

Is there such a thing as a component prog scan output DVD recorder which handles RGB input?
And if not, why not?

    Cheers
    Mark

    Okay now I'm confused.
One of the magazines has a test this month (What TV & Video I think) and they say the JVC DR-M1 SLB DOES have RGB scart input!

Mind you they absolutely slate everything about it, yet completely fail to mention the progressive scan at all, even though it appears to be the only one on test which has it!

So is it a case of
    a) there is a new version of the JVC out with an RGB input or
    b) the magazine hasn't got a clue?

    I suspect (b)....

    Hi BT52,

    I too own a PF2 and have just ordered a Toshiba DR1 DVD-Recorder for £299.93 :D

It can output PAL/NTSC Prog Scan or RGB but is limited to S-Video in. This I can put up with as I can't see me recording much from Sky that I'd want to keep. I really wanted the Prog Scan and firewire for the camcorder.

I think the magazine article what not as accurate as it could have been.

The PF2 will automatically change to PS as soon as it see the PS signal. Mind did in NTSC while testing with a modded Xbox.

This question has been asked a few times already and so far the answers and research says no :thumbsdow

Gotta big them up - 2004 is gonna be a massive year for Sampo/Claire.

As for toasters - not got there yet, but here's the latest Sampo microwave, ready for OEM sale ;)

Oh, and you gotta admit this does look pretty funky for a DVD recorder, if totally unstackable :

They do, they just don't have a retailer who's willing to sell them yet.

Remember, it's been four years since Sampo was sold as a brand name in its own right in the UK, and the last DVD excursion (DVE560) was a total disaster, not assisted by the then UK distributor going bust.

I think when people realise Sampo have re-invented themselves (and their portable DVE-P1 is absolutely gorgeous - see our road test here) and start to trust the brand name again, they'll come good.

Their success in the US speaks volumes (with Apex they introduced "budget" players with better functionality than the big boys in 2000), and the fact Gateway have used them to manufacture their plasma TV screens, the biggest selling plasma TV in the US, and recently placed a 100,000-set order, suggests to me the tide is turning :)
