    Nic, I hope you’re right.

I have a leaflet from a local retailer that says the Sharp (BD-HP20H) will be launched in ‘October 2007’.

Could it be just before the deadline?

    Hmmm....

Dean... Isn't it possible that a current player will be profile 1.1 compatable without a firmware update? But the BDA simply haven't announced it and with no software to test it we will be unaware till they do??

Could be talking complete **** but thought it might be possible... Will you give your £1 to charity then if that's the case? :D

The PS3 perhaps (but not without an OS/fw update), but AFAIK, no current standalone player has the secondary video decoder necessary for 1.1 compliance (for the PIP stuff).

I think it's important to remember a few things here.

The 31st of October isn't some sort of extrenal 'law', being applied to CE companies. It's a 'deadline' set by the BDA.

If they want they can change it, abolish it, or simply ignore it. If someone puts out a 1.0 player on the 2nd of November...so what? Are the BDA going to fine one of the CE companies? Ban them from producing BB players?

What if the Sharp says it's launching in October, but the shops don't get them until December? So what?

A few of us might notice, but I doubt it'd cause any sort of real problem for the BDA.

If that is the case then maybe i will boost it up to a massive £10 and give it to a deserving charity ;)

And..... maybe that could be your guess then ?? :D

Maybe they have the second decoder in there aswell but have not announced it.... look at the Marantz you could fit a RR Jumbo engine in there :D

Are you going to give us a date for the PS3 then Please Mike ??

Thanks Jim  Can we have a specific date please......

Good point, do you not think they would not have something in writing though... maybe they would not be authorise the use of the Blu-ray Logo or something if they break the 'code' ..... But i would of thought any Company in the developing process would announce it now... even if it ships late - is that allowed ??

No idea really, but if the PS3 will do Profile1.1 (presumably with a software based secondary video/audio decoder), then I suspect they'll just go all the way to Profile2.0 (BD Live) straight away!
    I'll guess at December 1st!

It wasn't meant to be a guess!

But if you insist, I'll say that the first 1.1 will appear sometime in November. As to which brand it will be.. Hmmm.. Samsung if I had to guess.

Are you giving out prizes for the winner? :D

The PS3 people have doubtless been working on trying to make it 1.1 since before it was launched.

If the PS3 doesn't become 1.1 compliant on the 31st of October/1st of November, or on the next firmware upgrade after that, or at the very latest on the formware upgrade after the first 1.1 title arrives, then it isn't going to happen at all.

Sony will not want discs out there with features that their all-singing-all-dancing-super-most-powerful-ever-console can't play.

    The delay is disappointing.

But as it's a film I wouldn't rush out to buy on day 1, a few months extra doesn't bother me.

Ultimately, when the HD DVD does arrive, we'll still have the choice of buying the UK version or the US version.

Getting stuff earlier/later has never been a major factor for me with home video - there's never that much in it.

I'm more bothered about US RC release that never get released in the UK.

Oooo Mike... that would be a GREAT early Christmas present :lease:

I agree on the PS3 front, when it's ready for 1.1 it has the kit for 2.0 already :)

    Thanks for your guess

Thanks for the guess Drongo :smashin:.... you forgot to give me a date though...... You may miss out on the Large prize fund if you don't give me a date.... :D

I think you may be wrong there... It may be 1.1 compliant capable but they may hold back on the update until they have a Firm base of 1.1 standalones to give them a bigger push .... away from the 'games machine'.... tough choice for the BDA really on the PS3 front !!

    1) FW the PS3 and get critized again for the Blu-ray 'Games machine' system
    2) hold back the PS3 FW update for too long if the 1.1 standalones are still delayed and get critized for 1.1 not being available.....

Thanks for that Peter... and for the guess ..... the PS3 still seems the fav for most people......

What? Because HD DVDs and BDs always come out at the same time?

Can't remember saying that, or anything even close. I'm dual format to buy as many films in high def as possible. Not to buy films on day 1 that I usually wouldn't buy until later - that'd be a very odd reason.

Funny, but I've combed that article, and I can't find a single mention of it having PinP.

Probably just as well, considering this:

    You didn't comb very hard

The two-disc Blu-ray Disc edition will have all the extras on the “Shake and Shimmy” DVD, as well as an exclusive picture-in-picture option that lets viewers watch behind-the-scenes footage and on-screen commentary while they are watching the movie.

    My comb is broken!

Could be another 'The Decscent', I suppose.

Well, if that Denon interview is correct, we could be seeing a lot of these discs not working on some players.

Just to be different, my new prediction is Sony BDP-S500 October 1st. And the first movie with PiP to be Spiderman 3 on 30th October.

The way things are going, I think it will be December at least before we see a fully functional 1.1 player - maybe even 2008.

The deadline has already been pushed back twice - I think there are issues we can only guess at.

I wish they'd hurry up though - I'm itching to buy a decent mid range standalone.

    Sort of.

If Spiderman 3 comes with 3 discs. The first two discs are identicle apart from one has Profile 1 and PiP features the other is a bog standard disc. So for people with Profile 1.1 players they use the first disc while people with profiile 1.0 players use disc 2. The reason for two discs is incase there's any compatibilty error with different players. So if problems arise people could just switch back their FW and play disc 2.

So imagine having two discs of the same film. Sony keeps stum until after release day so people dont cancel preo-orders. Then after if all goes well people find themselves with two copies of the same film. They give one or the other away to a friend who goes out and buys a player to play it on. So not only have Sony covered their ass they have also created a Demo disc which will more than likely be the profile 1.0 disc.

Any one who can't update their player right away just plays disc two.

God I should work for the BDA, my master plan is genius. :D

spiderman 3 with no PiP, sorry cant see that happening.

first player either December or January.

First true PiP title in March

    ;)

Evidently, there is one Profile 1.0 standalone on the market that can be 1.1 updated via firmware. Kjack would not say which one, i tried.
