    Hi all

So my gf bought a second-hand PC the other day to replace her Dad's dying machine. She brought it home and I tried to connect it via ethernet to our home network. However, it wouldn't connect.

The problem is that the ethernet port is simply not recognised  It doesn't appear in Device Manager. It does however light up orange and green when an ethernet cable is plugged in.

The PC is running Win XP, and the motherboard is an Intel D865GLC. I have tried downloading drivers from the Intel Downloads site, but the PC just tells me there's no ethernet port to apply the driver to.

I'm stuck now, and am pulling my hair out. I don't want this problem to beat me!!! Any ideas what I could do to try to resolve this? I've built approx 10 PCs in the past with no problems, though admittedly they've been with brand new motherboards and I've had the appropriate motherboard disk each time.

Are you sure it's not disabled or requires Ethernet drivers? Nothing in device manager with an exclamation mark?

    I have a pci 100/1000 if you want? £7

Check the bios and and see if its been disabled.

I'm sure I've got a PCI Ethernet card you can have for the cost of postage if I find it.

Nope, not disabled as far as I can see. There is no mention of it in Device Manager, let alone an exclamation mark.

Thanks for your offer, but I'm gonna try getting this working :)

I've had a quick look through the BIOS, and can't see that it's been disabled

Yeah I made a fresh install of XP and I've downloaded all the drivers and tried to apply them. It doesn't seem to make any difference :(

The seller says he was using his internet connection via ethernet before selling, and is being really co-operative, so I don't think he's just saying that. Definitely seems to have either spontaneously given up working, or something software related...doing my head in now lol!

IN the bios it will snow up as onboard lan disable/disable in device mge is there any hardware under network adaptors? Is there any unknown devices showing up?

You could try burning a lunux live cd and booting the pc from that plug the ethernet cable in before do and if you can connect to the internet with the linux os you know the port is fine.

You have to load the chipset drivers immediately after installing XP and before installing any service packs or updates or software.

Did the vendor use XP or W7? have you tried W7 on it?
