Problems using Optical mouse in Windows Vista

Just bought a USB optical mouse to go with my Toshiba laptop, but can't get it to work. Mouse didn't come with any software either.

Anybody else had this problem?

I know the mouse isn't faulty, as I've tried it on my Windows XP desktop

the USB socket on the Toshiba isnt faulty?
