I'm sorry for repeating the post I made earlier in another thread but I think my query might get lost in there.....
Have owned my PS3 for about 3 weeks now and been very pleased with it.
Everything was going fine until I downoaded the latest update on Friday evening.
All seemed well at first as I was watching a DVD but then the unit "locked up" and the picture froze on the screen. It would not respond to any inputs from either controller or DVD controller.
I switched off, turned the unit on again but got a wierd pattern on my TV screen and again (obviusly) the PS3 would not respond to inputs from either controller.
I switched the unit off for half an hour, turned in back on, and it seemed to have cleared itself. Watched the end of the film OK, turned off and hit the sack.
Went to watch Casino Royale last night and once again the picture froze after about 20 minutes and the PS3 locked up.
Turned off, waited half an hour and again it seemed to have righted itself.
This morning, playing a game with the kids and after about 30 minutes it again locked up. The only way out of it was again to turn the unit off. I waited another half hour, switched on and it was OK for about 20 minutes or so and then the same thing happened.
The unit has been working perfectly well up until the latest download, no problems whatsoever. It seems to be like it's overheating or something but it's not (if that makes sense)....the unit hasn't been moved since I first purchased it and there is plenty of ventilation where it is situated. It has only been playing up since I downloaded the latest update on Friday evening.
Has anybody else experienced this, or can they point me in the right direction (please don't say 360 ) or offer me any advice please?
Many thanks for reading.
Rob

Hi

I have had my PS3 since about end of March was FW 1.50
when i got it now at 1.92 and no problems with any updates
so far, call Sony if they think its faulty they may suggest going
back to shop to replace it or they will send you packaging to return
it to them for replacement.

Rab.

The best thing would be to get it replaced rather then faffing around trying to get it fixed. I suspect there is no easy solution or fix to that sort of problem.

Thanks for the replies and the advice.
I telephoned the PS3 customer careline this afternoon not really expecting anybody to be there at 3.30 on a Sunday.
Imagine my surprise when the call was answered very promptly by somebody that seemed very sympathetic to my problem.
After asking me a few questions and getting the serial number of the unit, Sony have arranged to have it collected on Tuesday and are swapping it for a brand new one despite me purchasing it from Amazon (in my experience, usually a manufacturer will tell you to go back to the shop where you purchased it).
First class service from Sony, and they are to be applauded. Pity Samsung don't react to a problem in the same way :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Thanks once again for your replies, I will let you know how the new one behaves

Are they dropping you off a new one at the same time as they are collecting yours?

Did you find the customer care line that you phoned in the manual as mines in the loft.

Yep...dropping me off a brand new unit and swapping on the day. The number I rang was 08705 998877 and this was given to me by somebody on the "official" PS3 forum. Sony confirmed that this will be a BRAND NEW UNIT rather than a refurb.

Well my new PS3 has turned up today as promised via courier....straight swap done for mine.
Little bit concerned though as the new unit wasn't in any kind of packaging.
I had been advised not to bring my leads and controllers with me as it would just be the unit that was replaced.
I really do want to believe the guy at Sony, but I hope that I haven't just swapped my 3 week old unit for a 6 month old refurbished one. That would cheese me right off.
To be honest, the thing is unmarked as far as I can see, but I would have still expected it to be in some form of packaging.
Also, will my years warranty run from the time I purchased the original one, or from the time it was replaced as faulty??

if its not in any packaging id be a bit worried that it wasnt a brand new machine.

That's what's concerning me.
At first, I thought Sony's suggestion of swapping machines rather than me having to faff around with Amazon would be a lot easier. But at least with Amazon I could have got the whole thing shipped off to them and would have received a brand new boxed unit.
As I say, I don't like disbelieving the guy at Sony, but I can't believe that Sony UK would have a whole heap of these units knocking around their offices "out of the boxes" ready to swap for faulty units.
Could I not demand a brand new boxed unit from Sony on the basis that my faulty PS3 was only 3 weeks old and they admitted that there was a definite fault with it?

Sony do not use 'packaging' to swap the machines.Unfortunately I have had a few swapped and they should arrive in a sealed crate, opened in front of you. Sony will confirm that all units are new and come with the 12month warranty.

As for your fault..a few people have had the same issue on these forums. I do think that the update has caused a few problems. I don't use my machine for films much and have had a few freezes. Normally after playing Warhawk and going into another game

I probably would have attempted to re-flash the firmware (if this is possible?) before returning it to sony. Downloaded it to a memory stick and updated to 1.92 again just to be on the safe side.

Well I'm happy to report that the new unit seems to be performing OK after plugging in and downloading the new v1.92 update.
Wireless network was a breeze to set up, and I'm even streaming media from my PC via WMP.
Fingers crossed it doesn't all go pear shaped again.....:smashin::smashin:

Hope your new PS3 stays good Smiffy. I had a bit of a scare on mine the other day whilst watching a Blu-ray. The picture froze for about 10 seconds, but started playing again. I really hope mine isn't fooked as i have had it since it came out and have uploaded, lots of Photo's, Music etc. and wouldn't like to go through all that again.

Fingers crossed for you Stodge.
I've just had my PC's hard drive go tits up, and whilst I backed up the REALLY important photo's I had I've lost loads of piccies that I much rather hadn't, along with a shedload of MP3 files.
That'll learn me
:rolleyes::rolleyes:

OT but this happened to a neighbour of mine and I used a program called File Scavenger 3.1. I recovered all the photo's and MP3's in under an hour. :)

Good luck in recovering what you've lost! :)
