I have an Olympus 765 and I am having problems getting my computer to recognise it. When I plug the USB cable in nothing happens. I used to have a Fuji and used to use a card reader which started up with Camera and Scanner Wizard, but it use an SD card. This camera as you know uses an XD card and when I plugged it into the computer it turned out it was USB2 and only had USB1. So I bought a new usb2 card and I still have the same problem, and the camera name does not appear in the list as per the Olympus manual, What I get is " Make sure the camera is switched on" or simlar. Is there any kind of software that I need to make the computer recognise the camera. When I try to open Scanner and Camera Wizard I get " The computer cannot detect the camera or scanner etc. Help!"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The USB thing shouldn't stop it from working, because AFAIK all USB2 stuff is backwards compatible with USB1, it's just a lot slower data transfer.

Have you installed the drivers for the camera? They need to be the ones that are designed for the version of Windows you're running.

They should be on a CD that came with the camera, or you could try their website.

What operating system does your computer use? You normally have to install the drivers (as above) for W98, but XP does a pretty good job of recognising the camera without this step. Try connecting the camera to the USB port, then switch it on and select the data transfer setting - or whatever it's called on the Fuji - and follow the instructions that came with it.

I'm using the Olympus now and if I do that, nothing actually happens automatically like it used to. I'm using XP. Basically my Camera and Scanner Wizard is not working with my camera.

hansi have you still got the fuji software/scanner card reader drivers installed it might be worth uninstalling them and then loading the olypus software,it could be your pc is (looking for fuji camera/scanner etc) and not recognising the olypus, had a simular problem with card reader installation, if i installed card reader first then camera drivers all ok had problems the other way round though,

there should be drivers for the oly supplied on cd with camera , to use for instance with win 98 /me etc

OK, so when you connect the USB lead and switch the camera on, is the camera listed in 'My Computer'?

If not it could be a problem with either the camera or the USB lead.

Make certain the camera is switched on after you have connected the USB lead.
Connect the power adapter to the camera - don't rely on the battery to supply power to the camera.
When cameras are attached like this they become USB slave devices with the result that the USB cable draws a large amount of current from the camera which the battery may not be able to supply hence the recognition problem.

and check the manual - fuji's connect in any camera mode, but other brands have to be in playback mode. Plus the oly may have a PC connection setting, similar to the Panasonic range.

no, it isn't! But the USB lead must be ok because the light on the camera flickers and I get the USB screen on the camera.

This may sound like an obvious point but you have clicked the "ok" button on the camera once it has started up haven't you ?

For XP you don't need drivers for this camera.

Yeah, I have, in fact it's pretty fail safe, because you have 3 options, PC, Print or Exit, so I just higlight PC and press the OK button. Still doesn't show on the "My Computer" icon as a camera

Well, I tried it again and opened my Photo programme, plugged my camera in and it dowmloaded ok, so i don't think there's anything wrong with the lead except that it doesn't open in Camera and Scanner Wizard lke the other camera used to and that was useful because most of my photos are stored in My Pictures. But I suppose I can always copy them across.Mant thanks to all of you who replied to my query. You are all very helpful on this board.

Thanks mate, I already use Picasa and very good it is too. It copied all my pictures from My Pictures and it downloads from my camera. Think I'll use that in the future but it is strange that the computer doesn't recognise my camera but Picasa does! Computers! Just no logic!!
